  1. Hi guys, Have been trawling through the info on the government website and on the forum and haven't had any luck. Wanting to know what it the earliest I can apply for citizenship. Situation is PR was granted in June 2013, I then visited Australia in April 2014 to activate Visa, stayed for 2 weeks then returned to UK. Moved out to Australia permenantly in November 2014. So can I apply from April this year, 4 years after my first entry with the visa, or November this year 4 years after I officially started living here? Thanks for anyone with any relevant experience Nyssa
  2. I found out that I could do the extra 6 units of Science at my local TAFE, but it would mean joining the Science teacher training and just participating in the sections I needed. They wouldn't give me a cost, as I needed to enroll on the course first and then they would let me know which units I needed. I roughly worked out doing the extra units could take me close to a year to complete and that didn't take into account any waiting around for the units I didn't need to be taught. So I gave up on it as I was already considering a career change, plus I just really couldn't stand the thought of studying something I had been competently teaching months before! Doing the extra experience in the UK might help when it comes to landing a job, but it will not help you in anyway to register to be a teacher in NSW. If you want more info let me know, I still have the report from BOSTES which told me what I needed to do. Sorry to be so negative, I just wish I had realised before I was over here!!!
  3. But be aware if you do want to teach Science you may be required to complete extra training. To be registered to teach Science in NSW I would have to complete 6 extra units of Science because my degree is in Psychology, despite the fact I taught Science for over 4 years before I came out.
  4. Hi Jes Thought I would chip in with my experience as someone with a degree in Psychology and a PGCE to teach Science. I went through the registration with BOSTES to be registered as a science teacher in NSW. However because my degree is in Psychology I am required to study 6 more units of Science to be registered to teach Science here. I am registered to teach as a casual teacher only. So moving to Australia has meant an end to my career as a teacher. I didn't even realise it would be an issue until the paperwork from BOSTES came back! Clearly didn't do my research as thoroughly as I should have done! Nyssa
  5. We moved to Coffs in November last year. Lovely place, not too big but has everything you would need. Plus beautiful scenery and lots of things to see and do if you like the outdoors. We currently rent a 2 bed unit near the Jetty for $1100 a month. However jobs seem really difficult to come by, to the point we are looking at moving as neither of us has had any luck finding anything suitable. Best of luck with your move Nyssa
  6. Soooo I've hit a snag already with registering in NSW as a Science teacher. Just got my accreditation back from BOSTES and it states I need to do more training before I can work in NSW as a teacher!!!! Firstly has anyone else had this problem? Can you appeal it in anyway? I am assuming it is because my degree is in Psychology and so my Chemistry and Physics are not to scratch, which I addressed in the UK by doing booster courses prior to the start of my PGCE. Secondly where do you find who provides the training as it seems quite specific? "4 units of degree level study in 1 science and 2 units of degree level study in a 2nd sciencewith at least 4 of the 6 units must be at 2nd year level or above (1 other the sciences must be either Chemistry or Physics)". Finally I know this is my own fault for not fully researching the registration before coming out here, I naively thought if AITSL said I was fine to teach NSW registration would as well. Lesson learnt, so any advice please??? Nyssa
  7. I'll try and add you on facebook, then you'll be able to see what we are up to. Also I can then message you and answer all your questions
  8. Hi, I am a teacher and my OH is a plumber. We did the visa with me as the main applicant and him attached as he hadn't finished his qualifications. I did the whole process myself and didn't find it a problem. There is clear information for each stage and as long as you are willing to spend the time ensuring your paperwork is correct and be organised about it I don't see a problem. All in it cost us around £3000. I did a little research before I started just to check it would be straightforward for my qualifications and it was, so I got started. Happy to help if you do decide to go it alone. Nyssa
  9. Hi Debbie Move has gone very well, despite a small hiccup, with the estate agent getting the wrong day for collection of our keys to our permanent rental. But we are moved in now and just waiting for our container so we can have all of our possessions. Settling in well and love the area! Everyone is friendly and helpful and there is so much to see and do. Currently joining a local group to help us meet more people, something I would have never done in the UK but we can't expect people to turn up at our door asking to be our friend Next step is now to secure jobs in this area so we can stay. Do you have an idea of when you want to come out next year, or is it all waiting on the visa? I am sure the visa will go through quick with you being a nurse, I have seen so many jobs advertised for Nurses in Coffs harbour! Also are you planning on moving to somewhere near here? Nyssa
  10. Hi, We are moving to Coffs Harbour on Monday Very excited but have only been in Oz since beginning of the month. Keen to meet people in the area and find out about any local events. We are a teacher and a plumber in our late 20s originally from Hampshire. Nyssa
  11. Hi everyone We have just arrived and now we have a rental and car etc thought I would get my bum in gear and look into jobs. Reading this thread has been so useful so thank you! I have 4years experience as a secondary Science teacher, also teaching a bit of Maths during my first year. Knowing we have come out at completely the wrong time of year I plan on registering and then seeing if I can get casual work. In the mean time I hope to do some volunteering in the local schools so I can see what things are like over here. My main worry is it will be like the UK in terms of leaving a paper trial to show you are a good teacher, with time consuming incentives that don't benefit the students. I would love to hear some more experience from those teaching currently about the main differences teaching here compared to the UK. I'll also let people know how I get on with registering in nsw seen as a lot of posts suggest its quite strict!
  12. Hi Folks. Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the delay, I believed that new posts would come in via email but alas not. So after remembering my post, I thought I best reply again! The M3's via RORO. Was it much cheaper than container? I'm rebuilding the Caterham as I type, so I'd like it to arrive in once piece to the standard I rebuilt it to!
  13. We're looking for recommended companies to ship our belongings from South East, England to East Coast, New South Wales, Oz. No furniture to ship, just belongings that live in our one bed flat and some tools from my work van. We're happy to deliver the belongings to the shipper and pick up the other side as opposed to a company packing our house for us to save costs and the fact there isn't really all that much. Nothing heavy due to no furniture. I'm also shipping my Caterham and I thought about building a frame over this and loading all our belongings on top, so that it would only take up 10' of a 20' container. I've heard of race teams doing this with cars and loading tyres etc above but I questioned one shipper about it and they didn't like the idea. I'd be happy to take the risk and time to build if it would cost less to only have half a container leaving the other half to be sold out to a separate customer, but if not a goer, that's life. I was going to ship the car in a container, so if the above doesn't work, I'll be using a 20' container either way. Any recommended companies that are happy not to do all of the packing themselves and to let me fill a container that they supply? I'm currently using a few boxes to gauge the amount of belongings that we wish to take. I just hate the idea of paying for a container which is partly empty when I could optimse it and happily share out the space if it works out better financially. David
