  1. Why is education so important ? Is there such a difference from the UK to the AUS education curriculum ? I mean most people who have studied to degree level in the UK end up in a crumby job or stacking shelves ! So really what difference does it make ? Just snobbery ! There's people like myself who have a trade i.e. air con engineers , sparks , hair dressers , plumbers, joiners , who have their own businesses and make more money than some lawyers I know , so I don't see why there's this never ending emphasis on super dooper British education ! Putting too much pressure on kids to be high achievers rather than letting them be kids and enjoying life . Then there is the fact there is no jobs in the UK available due to the never ending recession , and now Cameron is talking about leaving Europe , that will make things even worse . Just proves Britain is too big for it's boots , thinking it's better than anyone else and you say Aussies are arrogant ? 70 % of Aussies have British heritage , so now I know where they get it from ! What happens when you go back to the UK and look up at the grey , black , cold , cloudy , depressing sky and realize that you've made yet another mistake and end up coming back to Australia ? Cold damp weather will play havoc with your Arthritis ,then the cold weather will give you Rosacea trust me ! See you in a couple of months Ping Pong POM lol
  2. NAB really good , had our file and card ready as soon as we arrived in Perth. Transferred money through moneycorp as we could see exactly what rate we were getting prior to purchasing money unlike putting your trust in a bank that decides there and then at the transaction point , depending on how they feel with what rate they give you!!!
  3. Lol yeah I'm a Scotsman that likes the sun .When you have spent 37 years of your life in an overcast , grey , wet environment it leaves deep rooted scars ! So waking up every morning to blue skies and toasty weather really does make my soul happy , albeit the poor Aussies are being subjected to my white milk bottle legs just now . Even with sun glasses on they still have sore eyes! I think we might pop over to Melbourne for the weekend in March just me and the misses for a reckie just to see if we could live there and make some comparisons with regards to houses , infrastructure etc. How is it for trains and taxi's for getting in and out of the city at night ?
  4. I hear you mate but the big reason for leaving Scotland was the weather and TBH weather in Perth is amazing > in the four months I've been here I have became spoiled lol. I can plan every Saturday by chilling on the beach and body-boarding here if I want too . Is there good beaches with good waves in Melbourne ? I love the look and vibe of Melbourne but don't want to wait 2 years until my sponsorship matures ,then move interstate , uproot my kids if the weather isn't great in the summer at least ! Don't mind a cold winter as I would be busy at work . Are Melbourne people more open ?, as I find people here a bit closed off , like small town mentality , they don't really want to get to know you.
  5. I'm sure the weather in Melbourne is pretty crap though is it not ? I mean, it has cold winters and every time I look at the weather even in the summer it seems to be raining or overcast. We are in Perth but originally we wanted to emigrate to Melbourne . We were told by our agent that Perth was better for families and there is endless beaches ,plus it would be a lot easier and faster to move to Perth. We have been here 4 months and we are starting to wander if we should go to Melbourne as originally planned for a weekend to see what all the fuss is about. We have been looking into buying a 4 x 2 house here in Perth and it seems that the costs for what you get doesn't bode well. All the houses seem to have an alfresco area and no garden. Here on the news all you hear about is people getting attacked by road rage thugs and people getting glassed in the pubs etc.We haven't been out yet so can't comment. We have had an issue with trying to get a taxi from a friends house when we waited an hour and a half for it to arrive, so we are a bit apprehensive to go out clubbing in case we can't get back home. I'm a Industrial / commercial boiler technician working on boilers so maybe Melbourne would be better for me as it's colder in winter etc. We are a family with 2 kids aged 5 and 2 yrs. Sorry to jump in to the writers post but just wanted to know if Melbourne would be ok for families as well as singletons ? And is the pay the same as Perth or lower ?
  6. Yeah , it's a joke !!! sparks on the WHV can apply to TRA then sit a 1 week course at the CET then a week at their house or whatever , then apply for their A grade licence . why is it one rule for one and one rule for another ! I have already sat Vetasess exam , now I have to sit 2 week course which will be 5 months after arriving here in Perth , train for another year , then sit another exam . Total 3 weeks off my work . I am having to use my holidays to go to college , so no holidays this year , well not that we could afford it anyways lol..... It's not that , it's the feeling of feeling inadequate like an apprentice . I'm 37 next week and having someone shouting at me every day is peeing me off BIG style !!! keep going to the beach , looking at the water , enjoying the time there to tell myself "short term sacrifice , long term gain " but in all honesty it's hard when your in the thick of it not seeing the woods for the trees ... ;-)
  7. Yeah it's ok if you like Aldi , I found after trying it in the UK it's cheap for a reason ! There are local markets you can buy your fruit and veg from but you have to be careful as proved yesterday when peeling the sweet potatoes we bought .( full of maggots ) We are a family of four ( 2 girls under 5 ) so factoring in nappies etc ... and we are around $240 a week and that's us watching what we are buying . We are in Perth , only me working on $35 an hour and we are skint here . Been waiting 10 weeks now to see whether we will get family support . Make sure before coming you have lots of savings and hope you are lucky enough to get a job straight away after arriving ! Good luck
  8. We have been here 6 weeks , we are in the Morley , Dianella area. Me ( 36 ) , my mrs (32) and two little girls aged (4 ) and (2 ) . Up for meeting anyone to go for a walk , barby in the parks , a few drinks what ever ! Cheers Gordon
  9. Good luck , hope all goes well for you and do you have jobs to go to or you just going to wing it when you arrive ? we are today going through all the mountains of paperwork and looking out all the companies we need to tell we are moving ! You don't realise how much crap you accumilate in the loft over the years >we are not long behind you , we are heading out 12th September . scarey stuff !
  10. Hi All , Just had an email from my agent , guess what ......... We have been granted our PR Visas YAAAAAAAAAAS !!! Can't believe it 8 months from thinking about it , to getting it , we are over the moon ! Now the real fun starts with trying to sort everything. Good luck everyone who is still waiting my fingers and toes are crossed for yous x:wink:
  11. Hi , did he not need to send away any paperwork prior to sitting his vetassess exam ? I know I had to send away evidence to them before they would let me sit the exam , so if he sat the vetassess exam then surely he must have the right amount of paperwork. Does he not have any trade certificate or old college papers ?
  12. Yeah Im team 4 in Adelaide. They have came back to me now saying they will make a decision on the 22 nd of June as to whether we need the Spanish police penal certificate! Hope not , as it means more money flying to Madrid to go to the police station. :em4600:
  13. Hi All , we sent away our PR visa in the middle of April , got a case officer after two weeks who told us to send away police reports and medicals to Adelaide. All sent away three weeks ago so still waiting on the outcome , not sure if my partner needs a Spanish police report as shes Spanish but shes stayed here with me for more than ten years .We are really nervous because they could say " No we don't want you " after we have been spending all this money ! I'm not sure how long it takes for DIAC to make the decision . fingers crossed and good luck everyone
  14. With regards to your down under tradies course it's worthless in Perth WA , don't know about other states! I emailed energy safe in WA and they told me that the RTO has to be in Perth not the UK. I have to do gap training in Perth WA and on the job training for 12 months before They will issue you with a license. I sat my Vetassess exam last week in London and there was some other sparkies who had done the tradies course and they told me it was worthless (A rip off ) in their own words. regards, Gordon
