  1. We missed UK-style gammon (smoked/cured but not cooked) when we came to Oz. We discovered a pork curer/butcher in Orange, NSW, called Trunkey Bacon & Pork. Chatting to the wonderful matriarch of the company, Mae-Winn, at North Sydney Produce Market one Saturday, and explaining what we wanted, she offered to have a go, and next month produced the perfect smoked gammon joint for us. We haven't asked them in recent years, but it's worth a try! Mike
  2. It's now some 8 years since we received our permanent residency, and have since become Aussie citizens, but those following this route may be interested in this news story... Exclusive: Government quietly relaxes controversial visa policy affecting people with disabilities https://www.sbs.com.au/news/exclusive-government-quietly-relaxes-controversial-visa-policy-affecting-people-with-disabilities?cid=newsapp:socialshare:other
  3. End (or at least climax) of the story... This week Sue and I received our Australian citizenship at a ceremony in North Sydney council chambers, and celebrated with friends and family. Friends have asked if we were excited etc. The honest answer is, Very happy, yes, but the real excitement and sense of achievement came when we finally got our permanent residence (Aged Parent) visas and moved to Oz in 2012 – this was just the icing on the cake that rounded everything off. Good luck and good fortune to all who follow...
  4. Hang in there! I've been there and done that – but only after two or three years' delay and medical reports from consultants that all was stable and good. I was also recommended (by a member of this forum) to go up to Edinburgh for my medical by a former member of the Medical Officers of the Commonwelath [of Oz] panel when these could be based in the UK rather than (as still now, I presume) only in Australia. The point of this is that she really knew the system and what to say, rather than simply being a box-ticker. Good luck!
  5. Hi Fisher 1. It is a long, long time since I logged into this site. However we found it of great use when we were going through the same process circa 2010. We are now living in the lower north shore of Sydney and are in fact up for our citizenship ceremony on 15 March! Your post caught my eye because of the "coal scuttle". I also grew up with a copper coal scuttle which was in my parents 16 century cottage in west sussex. It was left to me and I had it in our home(s) in Hampstead, London. I nearly got rid of it when we came out here but then a friend suggested I used it for magazines and newspapers - which we now do. It sits happily in our townhouse here in Cammeray. So you might want to rethink that one!! Good luck. Sue:smile::yes:
  6. You could also try BankWest (actually part or subsidiary of Commonwealth Bank) – their Telenet Saver gives a bit over 4% gross, but again you have to make regular in payments every month. But they can be small, and can if necessary then be withdrawn again! So you could perhaps get your offspring to transfer say $100 by standing order, and then make a repayment shortly after. Mike
  7. G'day Val Glad to hear you've got that far! I expect there are people who have brought one out, but the general advice is, I think, don't – especially if you can get a reasonable price for it before leaving. 1. Fridges & freezers generally react temperamentally to being moved, and have to be left for some time time to settle down after being moved. 2. You may need to have all the refrigerant drained out (a specialist job), and then refilled in Oz. (I know that this applies to cars' air conditioning systems.) Of course, if this is done, it should negate problem 1! 3. It used to be said that European fridges are not powerful enough for Aussie conditions, but I'm not sure that this applies any more. I do know, however, that you're likely to want a good deal bigger fridge/freezer than in the Uk – especially if you're going to one of the warmer parts of Oz. All in all, I would suggest asking your shippers for their advice – if they are specialists re removals to Oz they should know. (BTW, after getting several quotes, we used PSS who were pretty good except for trying to charge us the cost of a parking ticket they got despite our warnings not to park on a disabled bay!! I suspect a lot is down to the crew you get on the day; our mob did an excellent packing job.) The only general advice is not to take any booze – it's liable to attract heavy import duty, so drink it all at a farewell party instead! Good luck! Mike
  8. G'day I'd make an inquiry if I were you; it's been known to wake them up! Mike
  9. G'day Rowley, and congratulations on getting to the finishing line! I think that the answer (to yours and subsequent questions) is that there are no restriction per se. After 5 years, however, you'd need to get a Resident Return visa before going overseas, unless you have meanwhile become an Oz citizen. And that's where there's a catch. In order to get citizenship, you have to have been physically resident in Oz for 5 years, without having spent more than certain periods outside the country in that period and in the past year. (I forget the exact figures, but you can find them easily on the DIAC website.) Hope that helps. Good luck with the move, Mike
  10. What a bu***er! Our thoughts are with you, Phoebe. Mike & Sue (Just back in Sydney)
  11. G'day Phoebe Only just caught up – we're in Scandinavia in the motorhome, and only intermittently in contact. Good news; the very best of luck for the Home Run. Mike & Sue
  12. If you want a physical label in your passport, these days you have to pay for it!! Mike
  13. Yes, I agree – I was thinking of a month from when you had your meds done. Mike
  14. G'Day I sympathise, but as others have said it varies a lot. Why don't you send your CO another email after you have waited, say, a month? Good luck, Mike
