  1. Would anyone know the estimated time from auction day to getting the keys when buying a property in Melbourne? We are trying to time it with our rental lease and are hoping not to pay rent and a mortgage for more than one month. Thank you!!!!
  2. Thank you for the advice. We will definitely bear this in mind. We are just so relieved to hear that there may be a chance we can get a mortgage with a 189 visa.
  3. that is great to hear! thank you! we will get onto that today!
  4. We were quite shocked too. it was such an abrupt email. We expected banks to know so did not want to seem rude and question him. We thought that the permanent part may only kick in after we have been here 5 years hence Commonwealth bank saying it is impossible to get a mortgage with a 189 visa.
  5. We are in Melbourne on permanent skilled visa 189 since January. Have been working since arrival and have a 20% property deposit. CommonWealth bank have told us that no one on a 189 visa will get a mortgage until they are permanent residents, which is about 4 years away for us. That is a long time to rent when we are in a position to buy. Does anyone know if what CommonWealth bank told us is correct?
  6. Thank you. Want just want a 2 bedroom house or unit with a garden that we could commute to Barangaroo in preferably under 45 mins. Seems that may be a bit unrealistic though.
  7. oh wow, we didnt know this so thank you! gosh we really need to compare this to Melbourne now.
  8. A unit is perfect, provided it had its own garden. Thanks for the info. Any idea if this would be a more realistic budget for Melbourne?
  9. It helps so so much!!!! Thank you. So much useful info! Just the 2 of us but no kids (yet). We really want a little house with a garden and are really eager to buy somewhere asap after we arrive, which realistically will hopefully be in around 6 months. Sydney does seem more and more like London. The downfall though is that Sydney seems to offer far better career opportunities than Melbourne. But as we are coming over for a change in lifestyle we may need to sacrifice careers and choose Melbourne. It is a tough choice.
  10. Thank you!! That is kind of what we have been doing but with not knowing the way we could commute in that made it more difficult. I feel we doing the right kind of search things which is a relief!!! Thank you so much again.
  11. Thank you. I will look at the websites you recommended and the suburbs and work out where best to place ourselves. Could I ask one more question, would a $140k salary in Melbourne get you an easier standard of living than $150 in Sydney? We have heard everything from there is not a huge difference in cost of living to it equates to about $50k a year. Our main focus is to buy our own little place after 10 years of saving for a deposit.
  12. yes that is the offer we have received. with not knowing Australia well we are looking at comparison sites for costs of living but im never sure how accurate they are. so i thought let me ask people who actually know Sydney as that is the best source of real info.
  13. Sorry tried to add we will be working in Barangaroo, which from looking at maps is close to Wynyard station.
