  1. Whether UK or Australia, surely we would rather become Americanised than Chinesied. The Chinese are coming by the truck load (or plane load) to immigrate and/or buy up our national businesses and iconic brands. We had better do something before they colonise us!
  2. Back to the topic "things should have done before moving back" We are test driving a few cars before moving back as we will need to buy one when we return. Save time
  3. I am also on 457 and only been here 8 months before my position was made redundant. I'm glad I'm going back though, was never sure this is the right place to begin with.
  4. well, not the holiday in Brisbane itself but wouldn't cost of travel from Melbourne (usual place of residence) to Brisbane (point of departure from Australia) falls within what the first bullet point says? You're probably right anyway but I'm just asking out of curiosity
  5. What are the reasons you may be let go? Is the company feeling economic pressure? Is your industry suffering from a severe downturn, e.g., mining and oil/gas? Sorry to sound pessimistic, if you are likely to be let go due to economic conditions, why not consider going back to your home country? Whether PR or not, there is little mining and oil/gas job around here at the moment, so what's the point of becoming PR and sit here seeing your savings eaten away by the high living costs. I am exactly in the same shoe as you, and have decided the 189 route is not going to be worthwhile as there is no job available. I would rather leave and take the super away with me while I can.
  6. The above booklet says "The costs will be considered reasonable and necessary provided they: 1. include travel from the sponsored persons’ usual place of residence in Australia to the place of departure from Australia 2. include travel from Australia to the country (for which the person holds a passport) specified in the request to pay travel costs, and 3. are for economy class air travel or, where unavailable, a reasonable equivalent. Travel costs must be paid within 30 days of receiving the request." This poses an interesting question. Let say an employee lives in Melbourne and works for an employer based in Melbourne. Before leaving Australia for good, as his employment is now terminated, he would like to tour Brisbane, as he has never been. Could he have asked for cost of travel to Brisbane from Melbourne, plus cost of travel from Brisbane to London. Assume the two flights are 2 weeks apart, allowing that person to have 2 weeks to tour Brisbane.
  7. Hi, I have 60 points on the dot to apply for 189 as a chemical engineer. What are the chance of success? I read that for some occupations you need higher points to gain invitation to apply. I have got a job in WA for the same occupation. Should I apply for WA nomination instead of the 189? Would this give better chance of success? Cheers
  8. Just saw your post and we have essentially the same question, and answered by Lizzie. Thanks again Lizzie!
  9. Hi, We (me, wife and two children) moved here a few months ago on 457 visa. Eldest child went back in September to resume his study. The plan is for him to complete GCSE before coming back to Aus to join us. We are now at a stage where we are considering to become PR under 189/190 instead of waiting two years before the employer could sponsor us. The question is, can we apply if one of the dependents is not in Australia when the rest of the family including main applicant are here? Should we inform IMMI that not all of us are here? Thanks!
