I am currently awaiting my teaching registration to allow me to teach in the primary sector. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to find a teaching job? Should I approach schools directly or do I need to be interviewed by Qld.gov?

You will need to register with the Qld government and then if you are accepted, chances are, you would be placed somewhere - not necessarily where you want to live. Primary positions are like gold dust in places where people actually want to live and you will find that priority for those positions is given to people who have done the hard yards in the less than desirable postings.

I think you can keep on searching on net and take the help of some friends over there if you have any friend there. You can register yourself in a consultancy.

Hiya, You could definitely approach Private Schools directly with your CV and you can also register to do supply teaching, which is pretty good money for 9am-3pm. Another option is considering Special Needs teaching (if you have any experience) because there is a greater need. I am on maternity leave now but was teaching special needs in a secondary school. I am PE trained.

Once you are registered, I think it is a matter of approaching your district office (they'll be online or in the phone book) for supply work which can often turn into contracts.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hi just thought I'd post this cos it would have helped me. I applied for a teaching post here after contacting the school and have discovered it is very different here. Firstly there was no application form- I later found out you submit your cv- resume here- and attach your reply to the selection criteria, outlined in the post, in a prose style with sub headings for each criteria and paragraph answers. Also put a header on your document with your name etc. You can e-mail that in. So that was illuminating! Next I waited to hear -about 2 weeks and a quick phone call for interview. So that interview - well that is particular to your subject/specialism/age group. I had very open questions they didnt seem to want to see anything I'd done . Now the harder part you don't get told on the day, or the next day or the next! Just when you think you're a complete loser you get a message from your referees to say they've just done your references and e-mailed them in! So they interview first here and then take them up unlike the UK where they are used to short list the candidates. I am now waiting to hear now but feel much more relaxed even if I don't get the post because I understand the application system!! Good Luck to everyone!

The system is so completely different here. Once you've had your registration approved - which can take weeks (keeping phoning Ed Queensland to keep the pressure on) you will be able to do supply work or accept a temporary contract. Then, once you've done a certain number of weeks of teaching you then have to submit a professional portfolio, with a lot of the same information you've already submitted, and then attend a 'suitability ranking' interview. Once you've got your ranking you are on a database for schools to select you if you are teaching an area they are looking for and Ed Queensland can choose to place you anywhere they like.

Primary jobs are extremely hard to come by, I've ended up in a high school - here they consider the 'middle phase of schooling' to cover Y3-10 so primary trained teachers are able to work in high schools. While I was waiting for my registration to come through I went in to the high school as a volunteer, which is how I got my job. The final round of transfers came through to schools last week so schools will now know where they still have vacancies to fill for next year now and will be looking for supply/contract staff.

Hope this helps.

I just offered to go in! Probably best to try to talk to the learning support co-ordinator or Head of Special Education in the school.
