Hi I'm an electrican from uk looking to come to oz on a 12 month work holiday visa... Ideally looking for a 475 and sponsorship but the time frame is too small as want to leave beginning of January. Wondering if I come and find an employer, could I change my visa to a 475 and do my various courses to get my licence?

Im currently from a marine/ aggregate/ petrochemical background, is there this sort of work available in the Queensland/ Victoria region?

Is it possible to get your skills assessed over in Australia while on a working holiday visa and maybe working as a trade assistant ?

Theres so much information its bamboozling my brain but after recently being made redundant I am very interested in trying Australia. I have looked at 457 visa in which you need sponsorship before you go but see that you can only work for the same employer for 6 months so wondered do companies tend to sponsor you if you can only work for them for 6 months ?

This is why I thought maybe I could come over on a 12 month visa try and suss things out and get my licensing sorted while over there ? Or take the skills assesment here in UK before doing anything ? I cant get a permanent visa as just passed my AM2 18 months ago so only have 18 month qualified experience and been told you need 3 years. Any help on this from someone who has had experience would be much appreciated and sorry if this has been posted many times before.

      Thanks

      Richard

I was reading the electricians forum just now on british expats site and seen some posts that the ostr route now needs 12 months gap training. I am arriving in Perth at the begining of August. I have applied for my Provisional license and am waiting on energy safe to send it, they emailed me today saying i did not send all my vetassess paperwork which i have now sent so hopefully i will receive it soon so i can book the course. But the thought of having to work on low pay for 12 months fills me with dread as i have a family to support. Has anyone arrived in Perth lately that can confirm this?

Yeah thats the worst with these forums you hear a lot of different things . I guess we will only really know for sure when we arrive. If i have to do 12 months gap training then fair enough. I can accept that i have to retrain as it is a different country etc , I dont expect to walk off the plane and be top of the tree. If the Uk had been a bit more like Australia our construction industry wouldn't be such a mess

Hi sorry I haven't been on here for a while. Congratulations on getting your visa granted. We arrived in Perth a week ago, and have been trying to get a rental which is a nightmare! So haven't even thought about the licensing much, will go up to Balcatta on Monday to get the books needed, there is a lot of jobs here so there seems I applied for a couple and had phone calls the following morning they weren't for electricians they were for fire alarm technicians, but isn't really what I want as the money is nt fantastic and even both interviewers said to go for electrical work as they pay far better, although I think without the licence it's pretty hard to get in any where, but like I said I have nt really looked into work too much, but will do next week and see what's around for electricians on the restricted permit. Otherwise will have to wait till I get my licence unfortunately. Good luck on the restricted permit application.
