Request for Brickie (the PIO member)

Brickie, i have a serious request for some content on you website. I has come to my attention recently that new poms that start on sites here as brickies haven't got a clue when it comes to Australian methods of blockwork ie. besser blocks, starter bars, rio, lintol blocks, laying beds* (this is a serious issue). I see your site covers a lot of brickwork issues but Pommy brickies don't have a problem laying bricks, it is the blockwork that stumps them. I have seen so many Pommy brickies either sacked after a few hours or jacking in because they cannot lay blocks Aussie style and Aussies being Aussies won't help or give a little bit of instruction or any words of advice.

I have thought of doing this, but because I dont do blocks I cant give any advice on how to lay them and I wouldnt like to steer anyone in the wrong direction with the wrong advice.

I dont even know anyone who does lay them to get advice off, laying blocks is a Qld thing and rarely done in Melbourne.

Uh-oh! We are headed to QLD Spring 2009...my OH is a brickie...so if you do find any info/help out re. laying blocks over there and what differences to be aware of and take into consideration...would be a great help.

I'll be watching this thread....

....anyone else in QLD know ahything?

Most of the blocks that are laid in QLD are hollow core ones, so you will have to get used to spreading a 1" bed on each side of the block which isnt fun, Ive laid a few and hated every minute of it.
I think they weigh about 15-20 Kilos too.
Size of the blocks is 190x190x390mm.

They still do lay bricks in Qld.

Then there is the humidity to deal with, thats fun too....

Thanks for the help/advice...you're a gem.

Told OH and he's had experience with laying lintel blocks and starter bars, reinforced retaining wall block work...so here's hoping this stands him in good stead and speeds up the learning curve when he gets over there.

I might get him to wear a couple of fleeces while he's laying here in the UK...get him used to working in the heat and make him sweat! ha ha.

p.s. My butcher wouldn't accept my Qantas credit note either when I tried to pay with it today! ha ha
