Hi Sam and Si
I have to say in Australia when looking for jobs they are very keen on Cert III, Diplomas and degrees. That is in general though. I have a friend who is very good in IT but has no formal qualifications and doesnt bother to look for a job in IT but i reckon he could get one if he really wanted to by just formalising by doing a course at Tafe. I see cleaning jobs that require experience and bar jobs where you need to have gained a small qualification. Sandwich hands need a food handling cert etc etc.
Saying that please look on
Jobs, Employment & Careers @ My Career or
SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site as they often show the wages. When it says award then you can have a look in the mycareer site and look for the expected wages for each profession. A lot of jobs are casual and they pay more as it covers holiday and sick pay. I work in a small call centre as a casual and am paid $22.12( to $23.76 depends if i am Team Leader for the evening) and i think that is slightly above. Dont plan to stay for long , just til the youngest starts school!
My suggestion is to keep looking and when you get here do a course to formally acknowledge your IT skills. Dont worry too much as the agents once you actually go in to see them will always be ringing you for work. They arent helpful til they meet you i have found.
When we got here neither of us are skilled workers and we just rang through the Yellow Pages and spoke to people. Dean got casual work with a pool cleaning company and then with the removals. There really is no reason you cant get a job if you really want one.
It will all fall into place when you get there
Good luck guys
