Any plumbers out there?????

Hi guys
I really need advice just to put my mind at ease, cut a long story short...

me and hubby and 2 kids all wanting to move to oz im going to train as a hairdresser im 31 my husband is 39 he works full time but is job is not skilled or does not have a trade,so i have said to him to look for advice and help on how to train as a plumber or something he has often thought he would of liked to have done but never seized the chance..He always said he was intrested in being a joiner or a plumber...

Now last year before we really thought there would be a chance of us going to oz i went into our college and asked on behalf of hubby about going on a course and training to be plumber ,only to be told that my husband needs to be in that kind of work to be able to train which i dont understand so my questions are....

1) how do you go about training if he is not a school leaver

2)How long will the course take to do

3)How much experiece would he need as well as the qualifications before he is recognised as a plumber

I know alot of people may say just go on the hairdressing, but i would be great if hubby had trade to .
i know ive gone on
but im up for any advice if anyone can point me in the right direction please feel free to comment

Thanks in advance
xx

Hi
We have moved to Oz and have been here for just over 3 months. We got in on a 136 skilled pr visa as hubby is a plumber. As far as I am aware (and I could be wrong-it seems ages since we filled out all those forms-lol) to get into Oz as a plumber on a skilled visa you need to show that you have 4 years work experience once you have completed your apprenticeship so i would be wary of taking a 'quickie' course as it won't give you the required years experience. Even my husband who has been a plumber for the past 24 years is now having to complete a course here to get a tradespersons licence (however I think this can vary from state to state) I don't think there is really an easy way to get a 'trade' you have to basically put in the time.
Good Luck
Mandy x

Agree with Mandy here, my OH plumber too for 25 odd years in UK. There really is no quick way to get round this. Same situation will apply for him as you in regard to applying for visa - 4/5 years experience along with qualifications. Any attempted shortcut will not help at all.

Given that you are the younger one, I would say you get the qualifications and experience and apply with you as the main applicant because by the time your OH has done it, it will be cutting it fine in terms of applying before he is 45.

Maybe your OH could then do a TAFE course in Oz and learn a trade.
Nothing wrong with him trying to find someone who would take him on in the UK as a trainee in the meantime, but college wise I have no idea as my OH did all his stuff long, long ago LOL

Thanks girls x
Oh well maybe he can concentrate on his job at the moment and bring in the oz funds(ha ha)while i try and get theese qualifications on hairdressing,
I think the course lasts around 3 yrs if i do up to level 3 not sure about level 4 on how long that will last,
but if i was to start getting experience in a salon while taking theese courses does that class as experience or does my experience have to start once im classed as qualified
im so confussed x

Hi Lynandsean
We're hoping to do practical in July for plumbing but don't mean to be cheeky but was wondering what sort of hours and salary we can expect. Also what sort of plumbing work is sean doing?
Thanks

Hi JVM

My OH used to do domestic stuff in UK but is now doing commercial so complete change, not deliberate, just how it's turned out. Because he is doing sitework all the time he is working 6/6.30am to 2/2.30pm (depending on site) 5 days a week but can work Sats if he wants (he does). Would presume that if doing domestic then hours would be similar to UK although don't know for sure. Salary wise up on the Gold Coast, the going rate is around $25 per hour when you are on a provisional licence. Once you have done your training to gain a full open licence it's more but again not really sure as not there yet. It's easy to get sucked into 'plumber's are coining it in, giant house, drive a merc' crap. Don't fall for that, think you can earn an OK living but nothing more.

Hope that helps a little.

Lyn

Hi All
Lyn don't tell me you haven't got that merc yet...lol
As Lyn says the moneys okay but not fantastic or anything. The jobs a bit different than in the UK cause the plumbers here lay drains, dig trenches etc...hard work actually. The hours my oh does are similar to Lyns oh. At the yard for 6am and finishing for around 2.30pm Also as a plumber you will need to complete the training in Australia to get a licence. My oh is doing a course at the tafe at the end of the month which will then get him his licence. The coures are quite expensive too so be prepared!

Hi ya Mandy

Nah not the Merc LOL a little Kia hehe, OH's got a bl**dy great ute though !!!!!

How long is the course your OH is doing? is it an evening one? did it take long to get on it, as have read there is a waiting list in some areas. To be honest, haven't had time to check it out much here yet. Bloke at licence board gave us the phone number of some company that does online ones but I've lost it Doh! so will have to give them a ring and get it again - mind you he did give to us on a little post-it note so might have been unofficial like!!!

Sorry for all the questions and BIG sorry 'it's getting better' for highjacking your thread a little - still I guess these questions will be relevant to you at some point, fingers crossed for you.

Hi Lyn
No worries as they say here!!!! Well my oh had to have a practical assessment at Freomantle tafe, where he had to bend a few pipes and stuff. It took about 3 1/2 hours and cost $450.00 (nice work if you can get it eh??) When he had satisfactorily proved he was an actual plumber (so not sure what all the TRAwas about-lol) he now has booked to go on a weeks block course at the TAFE, which is 8am till 5pm Mon-Fri this covers all the regs etc..So thats costs us $575.00 plus a week off work and oh yeah, Migrant plumbing standards book (compulsory) at a cost of $198.00 all this together with the inital application fee of $200. Once he's done this course then he gets an "academic statement' which is to be presented to the Plumbers License Board within 14 days and then he gets his license! This is all applicable to WA so I'm not sure how it is with other states. Its all a right palaver I know that much but it needs to be done so thats it-oh by the way Lyn there was no real waiting list here, just gave them a call & he was booked in for his assessment within 2 weeks and his course starts 30th June.

Thanks Mandy
Must admit those costs are less than I had imagined - just hope they are about the same over here. I had envised a one to two year training thing almost like an apprenticeship so guess a week is copewithable and like yousay, it's just gotta be done coz that's the way it is!.
