Hi Lyn
Yes its just one of those things. Our attitude with most things is 'just to go with the flow' The costs aren't too prohibitive I suppose & at least here its just this one week course and then you're all done & dusted.

hi guys, you are in the same position as us. i will be the primary visa holder as i will be a nurse and like you im sure being a hairdresser you will be the visa holder. my husband wanted to retrain to be a plumber and after contacting colleges, plumbing boards apprenticeship schemes you name it we came to the conclusion that if your not under 19 you wont get an apprenticeship. up here in scotland the government sets asides 30 places per year for adult apprentices, which is great if you can find a company to take you on!!! we couldnt because they would have to pay him more than a 17 year old now my husband sold himself very well he offered to work saturdays for nothing told them hes reliable as he has a mortgage to pay unlike the usual 17 yr old etc etc but no luck so the only other alternative is to do a private course. which unfortunately isnt cheap. we are paying £4000 for my OH to train theres too much info to put on here just now but if you want the details PM me and i,ll happily pass them on. at the end he walks out with the same city and guilds as a 4 yr apprentice would and also practical experience so he will gain work here b4 we go the scheme is government backed as they now realise that they cant fill the amount of construction staff needed form school leavers alone as less of them are taking up apprenticships now so it isnt a sham set up!

quick fix

i would make sure he gets the full tech cert and nvq or snvq, one is not worth much without the other, also can you learn the underpinning knoledge in a short course, i will be honest you can not. a lot of employers will not be interested in quick fix courses, and yes i no its the same qualification but it is how it is deliverd. Im not knocking you, im just saying beware, i have seen so many people part with 3,4,5 grand and waste there time. if it works for you best of luck. also make sure the qual is a full city and guilds ie a 6129 and not one of the many C&G short quals like fixing copper ect.
i have seen this recently, a few small quals bunched together to look good when they are actually 1 day course that no one bothers with as they are crap.
best of luck and remember this is only my opinion, but it is a qualified one.

hiya thanks for that, yeah we thoroughly looked into it b4 parting with 4k, that number you mention 6129 all that was included and explained fully, apparently theres another one is it maybe 6128?? that is only the copper piping thingy (my husband was the one listening) and the guy told us that alot of companys are palming guys off with that and then they find out its not worth anything, so we researched it to death and called the plumbing fed people and its all above board and genuine, my husabnd has to also go to leeds to do 8 weeks of intense hands on work aswell i know thats not 4 years but the level of study that has to be put in is phenomenol it will take him about 12-18 mths to finish and that needs to be 1-2hrs per night they also have a new 3d computer package that he works through at the end of each module where he has problems to be solved, up here if your over 25 you only do a 2-3 yr apprenticeship as a year is deducted for "life experience" so by doing it this way hes not really scrimping that much, we dont expect him to walkinto a £30k job straight after but it will get him work starting basic plumbing but it was the only way into the industry

hi its getting better, luke is a plumber we are going on his visa (just waiting for nod for medicals) and i am training to be a hairdresser . i have looked into alot of what u are asking. working in a salon while u are training will count towards your experience time u will need clear references off all you work for. to work in oz you need levels 123 in hair not 4 as this is more a follow on if u want to run your own business. try to get your college course in a recognised salon name. i am training in a francsco college and its world reconised brand of excellence. college is the quickest way to learn. but go to the best u can i travel 14 mile round trip not far but i have hair college only 2 mile away! but my college is school of excellence in hair. apply now! th places fill up really quickly. i am starting level 3 in sept but my college allows me 2 work throught the summer to improve skills in there salon and get paid! this is for all students going to level 3. i did level 1 years ago level 2 took me from sept till april to complete i did work hard though but love it. i aim to finish level 3 in april next year then all being well wel be off! so u can see it wont take that long at all.
hope this helps if u need any more advice pm me and ill try my best to help... claire xx
