Is there a need for piano teachers?!

Hi!
We have our visa and are travelling over to Oz in October. Im a primary teacher and currently registering with QLD Board of ED etc.... I was just wondering how you go about working as a Peri piano teacher in primary schools or if there would be any demand if I were to teach piano privately at home???

Thanks for any info

The possibility of working in schools would really depend on whether the school had an external music program I should think. It may be something that an enterprising primary school would like to put on its curriculum if it had the expertise available to offer it - it would most likely hve to be a parent pays deal though. I see no reason why you wouldnt get private students if you advertized. My SIL is always able to pick up a few pupils for pocket money and she lives in Ballarat which is hardly the cultural hub of the world.

Thankyou Quoll for you reply.
The dilemna now is whether to ship my piano over with us (we haven't got an immense amount of things to bring with us as we have been renting) or just buy a new one when we arrive?!?
Do you know of any job websites that specifically relate to Primary Music Peri's or would you rec. just trawling through the Education Queensland Website to find any links?
Thanks for any help...

I think you are more likely to get a job as a classroom primary teacher than as a piano teacher in a primary school - I have no idea what a Peri piano teacher is but am assuming that's peripatetic in which case I doubt there will be one with the govt. Primary positions in plum locations are hard to find at the best of times so you may have to be prepared to go to perhaps more out of the way places. Your piano skills will give you an added string to your bow when you apply for positions though. You may have more luck with the private sector as they are more likely to have the added extras in their curriculum and have the parents to pay for them.

Good luck with your decision whether to bring your piano or not - guess it all depends on whether you find a house big enough to accommodate it as well.

You could start looking at the links here Careers & vacancies home page for jobs.

Thanks again Quoll for advice....think we will be renting something fairly small to start off with as there's only the two of us. You are right a peri is a peripatetic...i'm just a lazy speller!
Private sector is a something I'd given quite a bit of thought of too and had a look and a browse on the web at some near to where we hope to be living.
Catholic schools seem to be popular too i noticed. I aren't a Catholic but work in a Church of England School at the moment. Could I be employed in a Catholic School as a non Catholic?!

Could I be nosey Quoll and ask if you're a teacher too?

Rachel

No, was an ed psych for hundreds of years though I escaped last year thank goodness.

I dont think it matters if you are Catholic but you do have to have some awareness of Catholicism but obviously it is an advantage. Good luck with your hunt!!!
