Question How do i get a Tax File Number?

Can any clever peeps on here tell me how to obtain a tax file number (thats if i need one on a whm) and do i need a bank account in Oz to work there? I have a Halifax account but not sure whether its useable over there.

Also I have a friend of 34 who is interested in coming with me to oz but is told old for whm is there an alternative visa available for her? she is a beauty therapist.

Thanks guys/gals x

Everything you ever wanted to know about tax file numbers can be found here Tax file number essentials (Welcome to the Aussie tax system)

No, you dont NEED a bank account if you are working here but it would make life a whole lot easier if you did have one. Most employers will ask to put your pay into a bank account rather than giving you ca$h. It is relatively easy to open one up (and no, your UK Halifax will not be any use to you, other than to get money out of via an atm) - all you need is 100 point identification (things like birth certificate, passport, photographic drivers licence etc) and they will sign you up straight away.

Not sure about your friend though, other than that she could come on a long term holiday visa but that would not allow her to work.

Hiya ,the easiest way to apply for your TFN is on line when you arrive(you will need an australian adress),they normally take 5 to 10 days to arrive, you must give this to your employer or ou will pay emergany tax at a higher rate than normal.
It is very easy to open a bank account on line before you leave, you will be able to pay money into it but cant withdraw until you arrive here and go into a bank to activate it(you will need an address for this too).good luck with everything but im sure you will be fine
