Project Manager/Site Foreman - Construction (BRISBANE)
Let me know if you are a site forman or site manager or construction project manager or contracts administartor (QS) and moving to Brissie/GC. I can possible help you out if you are looking for a job and coming to Qld fairly soon. The economic boom has gone nuts here and we are struggling to recruit. I can pass your CV on if you have the right experience. FYI - I am a PM at a constrcution company in Brissie and we are recruiting, so this isn't a scam or anything!!! (Just read it through and thought it sounded like one!)

Hi Darren
I was interested to read your post with reference to contract management in Brisbane, we(wife and 3 young children) are planning to arrive in Brisbane in January 09 on a skills visa based on my carpentry qualifications . I have not been on the tools as such for over 5 years as the company I used to sub contract for has experienced rapid growth and I have moved along with them to a point where I am now a projects manager responcible for 4 very large luxury projects (£2million build cost each )each with a contract manager and assistant running their individual site . My plan was to arrive in oz with my tools and start again as I have no formal contract management qualification . In your experience would there be work for a contract manager in the Brisbane /Sunshine coast in the domestic field and roughly what would the pay package amount to . My responcibilities have included budgeting, contract administration, procurment to a point of instructing sub contractors, health and safety monitoring, quality control and dealing with clients on a day to day basis .I am happy to go back on the tools but I am 38 years old now and the mind is willing but my body objects to being pulled around and it would be a shame to not use my proffesional experience !
Thanks
Kris

Mate, if you have PM / CA experience there is no need to go on the tools - work in SE Qld is EVERYWHERE, esp in construction. If you have experience you will not be out of work long! Depending on your experience and what area you end up applying for the pay varies alot. Unless you really want to I would avoid going on the tools as the senior roles is where the money is. Just very roughly a CA just starting out can expect $60k-70k + supr, although more experinced guys (ie senior CA's) will get a fair bit more than that, and in fact I have seen adverts for CA's at $160k, but then I imagine they would be expecting a lot in return. PM's again vary alot. You could be looking at anything from $80k-$write your own cheque (I have seen adverts ranging $200-$300k), but again the higher end would require some specific skills and long work hours (ie 6-7 days a week at 10-12 hours day). Also the higher end stuff requires degree qualified, certified PMs. The lower end doesn't require that, just proven experience. Obviously it all depends on what you are after, but our PMs are getting $80k-$120k(?)+supr+car.
As it happens I am going to be running the utilities dept once we get more work in (not yet big enough to be a dept), so once that happens (6-12 months?) we will be recruiting for a CA/PM. Beside that we are expending in other areas too, so there are always opportinuties with us. Let me know if you want to pass on your CV - I can easily keep that on file, and you can get in touch again once the time is nearer.
Any idea where you are planning on settling in Brissie?

It's reassuring to know that I may not have to spend my day swinging a hammer in the burning sun . In our heads we are heading for the Sunshine Coast but the plan is to get off the plane, look around and rent a house wherever we like the look of (never been to OZ before ),put the kids in school (aged 8,4 &2 ) and then sort out work when they are settled . I have spent the last few years working 60 hours a week and have missed huge chunks of my kids growing up and now as I approach 40 and we have a small amount of stashed money I intend to be a little reckless for the first time in my life and enjoy my family while they are young .
My plan is to rent a 4 bed house with pool which I believe will set us back around $600+ a week ,does this sound about right? Have you been in Oz long ?
Cheers
Kris

Kris,
We came to Aus (Perth) in May 05. We moved to Brisbane 6 months ago as the west coast is very isolated and we really wanted to check out the East coast before our little one starts school. Don't think we will be going back!
Yes $600pw sounds realistic. You should get a decent rental for that, depending on where you are looking. I definitely think renting to start with is the best way. Do it for 6 months and really get yourself out there. Look around, see what you like, talk to people (everyone will tell you where they live is best!). Decide if you want to build or buy. We are building for the second time. It's good as you get what you really want, but it is a little on the stressful side. If you get a rental with a pool try to get one where the pool maintenance is included, or make sure you allow at least $50-100 per month for maintenance. You really don't want top have to do that yourself - kills the enjoyment of having a pool!
I'm not sure what the opportunities are like up on the Sunshine coast - not bad I would imagine. It's a bit of a hike from up there to work in the city though (be warned Brisbane has some of the worst rush hour(s) traffic in Oz). A lot of Poms seem to settle in North Lakes which is a beautiful area. We didn't go there as it was too similar to the place in WA where we lived for 2.5 years, and we wanted something really different. So we have settled in land a little in Brookwater nr Springfield Lakes. Also if you want to consider the Gold Coast I believe Coomera Waters, Emerald Lakes and Robina all get good feedback. I'm sure there are plenty of other places though. Stick the names above in google.com.au as most of them have their own website. I know all of them round us do.
As for quality of life, it's all here mate. You just have use it. A lot of Poms seem to come out here and try to live the same life as in the uk, and then get upset when they can't buy Prawn Cocktail crisps! It's a different world, so be prepared to adjust. You will miss home, you will miss friends and family. But when we think about going back to the cold and living in a pokey bed terrace.....no, no, no! We were the same as you, never even visited before we made the move, and I wouldn't move back if you paid me. We LOVE it. You just have to give it time as you are starting from scratch. Just get on the forums, invite people round to dinner, take up any past time that you feel might interest you (I have learnt to surf and am a member of the Queensland Roar (Soccer) supporters club).
I know what you are saying about missing time with your kids. I am fiercly protective of my home time. I get very annoyed if I go over 50hrs a week. It does happen as well (difficult to stop it while construction is going so crazy), but I try to keep a lid on it. I'm contracted for 38 hours a week, but that is rare. I normally aim for mid 40's per week. Different companies have different routines.
Anyway, hope you can make sense of that. Bit all over the place with that answer. Let me know if you have any other questions, and good luck! (have you got your visa, or is the dreaded wait still ongoing?)

My OH is a project manager for a well know electrical company and has been so for the last 10 years. He currently works on new build schemes which entails installing infastructure for large housing estates, this includes dealing with field staff, contractors, cost control, stock control etc. Before this he was working for the same company as a cable jointer. He has worked for this company for a total of 20 years now.
We are waiting for our visa to arrive after applying in August so hoping to get asap, as soon as the house is sold and we have visa then we are on our way to Brisbane but at the moment it is difficult to give a timeline. I was hoping about Sept ???? (earlier if possible - Pls Mr Visa Man). Not sure of exactly where we are heading for but Redcliffe and surrounding areas sound good. We didn't want anywhere too far from the City just incase he got a job there!
I hope this is of interest to you.

Hi Darren,
My OH is a Site/Project Manager for a construction company based in East Anglia.
He has already had his skills assessed by Engineers Australia.
He has approx 15 years experience in the Water Treatment sector and other infrastructure schemes.
I used to live in Brisbane a few years ago but my OH has never been.
We are hoping to move to OZ in the next 2-3 months.
If your company has any possible vacancies i can send you his CV.

hi,
do you know what the demadn is like on the scaffolding for your area (G.C / Bris) ? We have just put C.V together and posted to a couple of firms as we need a sponsor ? We can't believe that with all the work out there in the Construction side of things that his trade is not on the demand list. many thanks.
Darren, I currently run my own carpentry company (Briggs Brown | Specialists in loft conversions, carpentry services and window repairs) and am currently awaiting a case officer for skilled visa. I am looking to move to north brisbane in october, therefore I am now actively seeking work. I would be suitable for a carpentry based supervisory role, I could send CV if you know anyone interested. Thanks
