Hi Darren,
I have read your thread and wonder if you can offer any advice.
I am currently a contracts manager with NVQ level 5 (post graduate degree) in construction management.
Values of the contracts that I have been managing range from £300,000 to £6 million.
The area that we were thinking of moving to in Oz was Adelaide as we need state sponsorship and SA sponsorship includes the area of Adelaide. We have not properly considered Brisbane as Qld sponsorship does not include Brisbane Metropolitan areas - do you know what this means? I would be very interested in Employer sponsorship. We are using an agent and are at the vetasses stage of the app. Is Brisbane very affordable housewise?
Any info you can give would be appreciated whether that is contacts you may have in Adelaide or if you would like my CV forwarded to you.
Thanks.

Construction Manager's position?
Hi Darren
Having read your posts I'm hoping you might be able to give me a bit of advice? I am currently a contracts manager in the UK and have the NVQ level 5 in Contracts Management (post graduate degree equivelant). The trouble is vetassess are not accepting this as degree equivalent and will only treat it as a diploma and therefore I will not be able to apply under the 50 point occupation Construction Project Manager. I am 40 years old so with all my points I am only up to 85 in this case and therefore can't even apply for state sponsorship as I need 90 for this. It seems mad as I have 6 years Contracts Management experience and over 20 years experience in the building industry. When I left school I worked for 3 years as a plumber although I never qualified, I have kept this up on a casual part time basis in recent years so as not to 'lose' it, I have been told that to apply for the visa as a plumber I do not need qualifications but do need to have the experience, which I have got. So I am now thinking should I try this route as it will give me more points to get in?
I see from your threads that you have offered to pass on CVs for people, could you do this for me if I contact you in a PM?
Would really appreciate your views on this.
Thanks

Any PM or SM vacancies?
Hi,
I know this thread is old but what is the situation like at your company at the minute? I am a PM just over from England and I am really struggling to find work and find the agencies are lying to me.
I have good C.V and was a Q.S in previous employment so have a good commercial understanding. Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Tony

PM or SM vacancies
Hi Tony
Since my last thread, I have been offered sponsorship by an Employer in Perth as a Building Surveyor and am currently awaiting the 457 visa to come through.
To be honest I thought I would go over and be a Contracts Manager but the Surveyor job came up and it suits me.
I'm sure with your qualifications you will find a job to suit you, it just might not be the one that you initially thought.
All the best, Mick
Landed in Perth November 08 - loving It!!

Depending on your experience and what area you end up applying for the pay varies alot. Unless you really want to I would avoid going on the tools as the senior roles is where the money is. Just very roughly a CA just starting out can expect $60k-70k + supr, although more experinced guys (ie senior CA's) will get a fair bit more than that, and in fact I have seen adverts for CA's at $160k, but then I imagine they would be expecting a lot in return. PM's again vary alot. You could be looking at anything from $80k-$write your own cheque (I have seen adverts ranging $200-$300k), but again the higher end would require some specific skills and long work hours (ie 6-7 days a week at 10-12 hours day). Also the higher end stuff requires degree qualified, certified PMs. The lower end doesn't require that, just proven experience. Obviously it all depends on what you are after, but our PMs are getting $80k-$120k(?)+supr+car.
As it happens I am going to be running the utilities dept once we get more work in (not yet big enough to be a dept), so once that happens (6-12 months?) we will be recruiting for a CA/PM. Beside that we are expending in other areas too, so there are always opportinuties with us. Let me know if you want to pass on your CV - I can easily keep that on file, and you can get in touch again once the time is nearer.
Any idea where you are planning on settling in Brissie?
Just recently joined this PomsIn OZ site and noted you posts regarding project management. I am a degree qualified Chartered Building Surveyor from the UK looking for potenial work in Project Management ( client side preferred, as this is where my expoerience is) preferably on the Goldcoast as that is where we are currently living. Have been told by lots of agencies there is not much happening at the moment and have even been told that I may have to look at working in the Brisbane CDB. Any chance you could send a private reply as finding a job doesnt seem to be as easy as you say in you post.

Absent...
Sorry guys, not been on here for a while;
To sum up the answer of most questions above, we like everyone else have been hit by the down turn. We are no longer hiring. We are very busy, but it is calming down now, so it is a case of wait and see. Good luck with the hunt!

Hi Darren
My husband Dave is a project manager - he has run sites both here and in Queensland - we land on the 5th March 2009 - we are moving to Tallai on the Gold Coast. I will forward you his CV - if I can get the hang of this - new to Poms in Oz!!!! We have 3 kids and cannot wait to arrive. At home today due to snow and schools closed so thought I would find info.
