Nursing in Melbourne. Still have salt baths post surgery!!!!

Just thought I'd share this! Working in a hospital in Melbourne when another nurse was asked by the nurse in charge to give the pt a salt bath to 'help' healing. My chin nearly hit the floor! All the research says that this is not to be the case. She dutifully put a handful of salt in the bath and carried on! Unbelieveable.

In my opinion nursing is 20 years out of date!! Don't come if you want to progress in nursing!!

Hate to tell you but most Australian swear by a "salt Bath" for skin problems
Generally the "Bath" is the Ocean. I must say it works a treat

I can see that the 'sea' would be beneficial. What I am saying is a handful of salt in a bath does NOTHING. You need 3 to 4 bucket fulls to make any difference.

it appears that the old remedies are coming back in, i work for a young gp who swears by salt baths but i must admit he does tell them to add enough so it tastes like sea water!

Now shoot me down. but I am old school and a firm believer in the old fasioned methods...but, in saying that, I am also Degree trained and can see both sides. At the end of the day, the old ways seem to be coming back around again.
We used Honey (real honey) for dressings back in the 80's so this is not a new way, but everyone raves about Manuka Honey.......me, I just say....been there, done it, have the T-shirt.
Salt baths were the 'in thing' and I put my hand up and admit that if I have certain problems...I put salt in my bath....can't seem to escape from the 'old wife's tales'.
A lot of 'new' nursing practises were actually undertaken many years ago....

Yes, we nurses in the UK have come a long way in our role but who has suffered the most?
I think at times we have lost sight of who is more important in the grand scheme of things.

Don't want to start a mass riot but this is how I feel......I for one will embrace a return to good old fashioned nursing practise...........I hope !!!!!!!!
Will let you know......if I ever get there !!!!

hi,

I would have to agree. bath salts wouldn't become the 'in thing' if it weren't for its benefits and effectiveness. bath salts were used for a long time and even though new practices are developed, these old natural remedies still exist and haven't been forgotten.
