Hi James.
Yes it is true. TRA no longer give certain skills the option to go through this route. It changed on the 1st September 07. My OH is a joiner and we started our application last April when it was TRA, but got caught up in change over, and now having to do it through Vetassess. You first have to do a paper based assessment which gets lodged to Vetassess and they tell you if you have passed this or not. There are 3 levels they pass on, 1. Pass and will have no problems with practical. 2. Pass but may struggle with practical. 3. Fail and can not do the practical.
If you go onto the website for Vetassess it will give all the info for your trade and what is expected.
The benefit of doing it this way, so I am told it before trades were going over with TRA, but skills were not recognised by Australia, but this way it is a recognised Australian Certificate you receive, making it easier to start work.
This is the website

Good luck, and hope this helps.
Andi.
