Not really sure if this has been answered somewhere else, or even if I'm in the right place to be asking this. If I'm totally on the wrong area, I apologise.
Ok, my query. We've started the visa process with an agent which is all going well (VERY nice people at Workpermit I must add) My OH is a plumber, city and guilds been doing it over twenty years etc etc.
We've been told that he needs to take some courses to be able to work as a plumber over in Australia. Which is not a problem, OH was expecting that. Obviously every country needs to make sure it's tradesmen are up to their roles etc etc.
Trouble is we're not sure exactly WHAT courses he needs to do and whether he can do them prior to leaving the UK or when we get out there. Obviously prior to the UK would be preferable so when we finally get over there he can look for work straight away.
We've been in touch with a company that does offer that service over here, and will qualify him for AQF level III but before we hand over the nearly four grand to do that, I want to make sure he actually does need this qualification and whether or not it would be cheaper to wait until we get out there.
So, any Plumbers already in Australia shed any light on this for me? Pretty please? ;)
i will be very interested to here any feedback on this my OH is a plumber we have our visas. i know that he can apply for his blue card here.
Good luck

Each state has there own requirements for this, check on their website to make sure. We are moving to Victoria, so I got in contact with the Victorian Plumbers Association (I think it called this) and was told that OH had to fill out a form to get his provisional licence and that he would be able to work along with a qualified plumber over there, all his work had to be signed off by the person he was working with, go to college for 2 nights a week for 2 years and pass his exam before he could be a qualified.
plumber.
Hope this is of some help,
Helenx

Hi Raven
Each state has different rules... here in Victoria they have the most stringent test/standards and you can check out the Plumbing Industries Commission website.
I thought the new skills assessment took all this into consideration now, and you have to have pratical skill test etc., before you get the visa and I beleive you get some sort of temporary registration now. Check out the TRA website links and it explains it all on there.
We came out on the old independant skilled visa 136 and had to sort it all out over here. Here's a thread I put on recently about our experiences, that might be worth reading: http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/jobs-c...r-plumber.html
Good luck all...... its worth it and we're still loving our life in Oz !!!

Thank you for all the info! This is exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for! lol, call me paranoid but I like to know all this sort of stuff beforehand (Yes, I'm a list maker as well!!) It's definately not put me off, for exactly the reasons you state in the post you linked to there :D
And bonus, that's the area we're looking at, so even more relevant!!
Thanks again hun! *wanders off to check out the TRA site again*
Hi Sally-Ann,
Great insight, my OH has the old 136 and wondered if there is anything we can do before hand on the job front. You mentioned CV OH (has city and Guilds in plumbing) has never had to do one. I'll have to do it for him are they the same format as UK ones. We are hopefully heading to Brisbane in Aug (depending on house).
Any help greatly appreciated just trying to get us as organised as poss. I think it's the thought of starting everything from scratch, very exciting but bloody scary aswell.
Also, wondered how you guys were getting on now?
