Am i correct in thinking that unless i teach in a rural area I will struggle to get a job as a teacher in OZ. Is it worth the gamble of moving to only end up as supply or should i have patience at first. As iam just about a senior teacher in England could i apply for similar posts in OZ. I have a Masters in Educational Leadership and have been teaching 8 years.
I have a friend that has been in Australia for about 3 years on an STNI from Victoria as a secondary maths teacher. I thought she would be teaching out in the sticks but when I visited last year she was teaching in Melbourne, and had been for most of her time there! And this has been permanent not just supply. However, this is just one person's experience and there are quite a lot of other posts on here that say different things.
Other states do things in different ways so it depends on state and primary/secondary.
When we get to Australia I'll be looking for a teaching post, but having spent the last 3 years as a Maths HoD, I'm not pushing for loads of stress by trying to go for something senior before I understand the Oz system. But then again, perhaps I can be a lady of leisure...!!!!
Good luck in your search.

Thanks; but i assume that your friend was able to get a job as she is a maths teacher, of which, along with science, ther is major shortage of in Oz, like the rest of the world. I, however, jusy scraped a B in GCSE Maths and teach Humanities; like in the Uk there seems to be no shortage of. Where are you going to? We were thinking of Adelaide as South Australia sponsors all teachers to move there. However, they dont appear to have a shortage of teachers in Adelaide itself but in the rural areas. So this puts me off. Also the houses are **** in Adelaide, seem better and not that more expansive in Sydney. Thing is New South Wales dont like non Aussie teachers so they dont usaully sponser them! Even though supply work is far easier to find in Sydney than elsewhere so we. otehrs in Adelaide have struggled to find supply work!
Sorry my post wasn't too helpful, but you hadn't mentioned that you taught Humanities. Hopefully someone from SA or NSW will be able to offer you more hope.
We're looking to go to Melbourne. DH is in IT and he reckoned he needed to go to Sydney or Melbourne, so in the end it came down to an offer for a sponsored visa through DH to Victoria.

Look up posts by member Libby1971 she is a secondary school teacher in Adelaide and teaches amongst a few other things RE
If you want to look for her she can mainly be found on this forum she was on the wanted downunder series last year and had a follow up this year, you may have seen it.
Thanks; do Victoria sponser teachers from non shortage subjects unlike New South Wales who only sponser Maths and Science? What is the weather like in Melbourne it looks like it rains and gets cold!
Thanks; I have been messaging Libby 1971 already in the Pomsin Adelaide site. She has struggled to get work though, her husband has a permanent job as primary so they are ok. My wife works as a manager of a shop, JD sports, at the moment so Adelaide may not be our best option. It is my kids that concerns me as my eldest is 12 and though we would have about £40,000 deposit to put down on a house not sure if a can get a job quick enougn to continue with mortagage payments. As I am bit snobby would like my eldest to go to good school!
I dont think Libby was sponsored and i'm sure she went on a skilled visa.
I believe she worked in a private school and I dont think it was rural.
Can you not get a skilled visa and go where you like and get a job on arriving a few on here have done that and took a supply job, then were offerd regular contract work.

Just looked up the Victoria site - sorry, no humanities on there. But there is more than maths and science, also DT, music, IT and MFL.
Hopefully you'll find a way
