Exclamation Tiler or carpet fitter?

Hi everone,

I only found this site yesterday but seem to have spent the last 24 hours reading through all the forums, with some real interesting reads.

My situation is this.I'm a 40 year old guy from Llandudno in Wales, presently working is a cab driver in London.I married an Adelaide girl 2 years ago,and we're looking at moving to Oz in 2-3 years. We would go where the work is,but would prefer Melbourne as our first choice, and probably Adelaide second.

I would like to learn a trade over here first before coming over, but which one?

I had thought tiling, there is an intensive 8 week course near me which is recommended, and at the end of it the huge tiling firm which run it will give me a job.I would then work here for a couple of years to get experience and then come over with my wife. After reading the job forum on this site,i see that carpetfitters are in demand and can earn a good living.Do tilers earn as much? and are they in demand?because maybe trainto become a carpetfitter instead.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Ste

Hi Welcome to PIO

Not sure of the answer to your question , so just bumping your thread back up as someone may have the answer.

Did see an episode of Wanted Down Under and the fellow was earning pretty good money from what I can remember doing carpet fitting!

Good Luck and Welcome

Thanks,

It was after watching WDU on tv,and seeing how well he's doing now(his wife has been on this forum a few times),that has made me have second thoughts about the tiling as the coarse would cost me £4000 which i'd rather not spend if tilers are not in demand,or if the pay isn't on apar with carpetfitters.

Would be great to hear from any tilers over there about prospects, earnings etc

Hi, How long is that course for? They are doing courses for alot cheaper this way i.e. £600.00. Although ile have to ask my OH what certificate you get at the end of the course.

Yes, I hope that some tilers do come on here and give a rough idea of potential earnings and work. Not sure if there have been many tilers on here!!

Good luck

Hi,

I've been checking out loads of tiling coarses online for around the London area, and they vary between 1 and 8 weeks. The one i'm looking at is 8 weeks or 320 hours, and looks the most impressive. If you do this coarse they also guarantee a full time position with a large local tiling company on completion.I haven't spoke to them yet,but even if if the earnings weren't that good,it's all experience to take with me.

We had the same thoughts about a tiling course, we are pushing for a possible job offer first though. Do they not similar types of courses out there??
Couldnt you just go on a Partner visa, if your wife is Australian??

Why bother training over here your qaulifications won't mean a thing over in oz just train over there and your qaulifications will be recognized
i'm a carpet fitter and i looked into qaulifications by a national body but they are not recognized at all the TRA assesing body won't recognize them as a few on here have found out as well im lucky i got through just before pathway d was removed my point being if i was you i would train in a trade over in oz because you would probably get a job easier and as the pay goes i bet tilers arn't far behind carpet fitters
hope this helps

I will be applying for a spousal visa so visa won't be a problem.

With regards to the training,i'd thought aboutdoing it in Oz but I think it would be easier doing it here as my wife is on a good wage at the moment which would help whilst i'm training and earning a low wage after first completing the coarse. Also it's a massive strain moving to another country with a trade never mind turning up with nothing and having to find a coarse then a job,and my wife having to find a job whilsy i'm earning nothing.

I haven't looked at applying for my visa yet which i believe will take about 9 months,so am looking at doing the coarse then working here for a couple of years to get my confidence up.(unless someone comes on here and advises against being a tiler in Oz,in which case i'd look at trying to train as a carpet fitter)

Thanks TheBrammies, but i don't need the TRA for my visa as i'm married to an Aussie, and i'm guessing that tiling companies only want to know you can do the job and aren't bothered about the qualifications so much.I just think it would be less stressful going over there with a bit of experience and able to start earning money straight away.

yes i picked up on your wife being an aussie i just thought it would be better for you qaulification wise to retrain in australia you are probably right about the employment side of things but an australian qaulification might give you an edge thats what i thought as afr as training in carpet fitting do a google search for NICF which stands for national institue for carpet fitters and there is a link on their homepage for training courses and prices
done it for you
hope this helps
ps i'm thinking of training for ceramic tiles when i get over there to just improve my scope a bit better
