That could make a difference.I'm 40 now, although look and feel about 25,but it had occured to me that spending all that time on your knees wouldn't do your back much good.I'm quite fit now but i'd imagine in another 10 years or so,my age may start to catch up on me.I think that whatever trade i look at now is going to be fairly hard graft.
Like a lot of my mates,i wish i'd tried for an apprenticeship when i'd left school.
Hi there, just read your post with regard to training to be a carpet fitter. My husband is a carpet fitter and we arrived in Perth a few days ago. Like yourself, we had heard extremely promising things about the pay for carpet fitters and that they are in big demand. However, since getting here my husband has contacted people for employment and so far has been told that a) there is no work available - in one case for a month and in another case indefinitely. Also, when discussing wages, my husband would be earning much less than in the UK and have to provide some of the materials, i.e bars etc, out of his own wages, they are not provided by the carpet shops here. I hate to put you off in any way or be the bearer of bad news but we watched the same programme about carpet fitters and how highly paid they are and for my husband, so far, this has not been at all true. He has about 10 years experience and is really highly skilled in his trade.
I don't know if employment prospects are better in other parts of Oz than in Perth, so it might be work checking out. We have both given up really good jobs to come over here and would hate anyone to be under the same false impression that we were. Oz itself is amazing but just wanted to let you know what we have found out about the work siutation so far.
Thanks for the reply, and i'm sorry to hear things aren't going to plan at the moment. If things are tough in Perth maybe you could look elsewhere.Donovan is a carpetfitter in Brisbane and seems to be doing well.I've also heard Adelaide is ok as well.
It's looking like i'm going to take a chance and go down the tiling route, which was what i was interested in doing before i read about carpetfitters being in demand.I'm near the training centre here in London, and i also get a job afterwards to get the experience before coming over in a couple of years.
Hi there, I do think maybe we have come to the wrong part of Oz at the present time, although Perth is really nice itself. Not sure if we can face another big move across Oz though so it seems that if Perth doesn't go to plan then it will be back to the UK unfortunately.
Just wanted to wish you the best of luck with your future, I am sure you will do very well as you do sound enthusiastic about the tiling course. Best wishes. Have a fab life in Oz when the time comes.
Thanks for that, but with regards to you moving back to the UK if things don't work out, from past experience of moving away and not finding the right job,i would look at all avenues before returning.
I was offered a position in a restaurant in Bermuda 11 years ago which didn't meet my expectations so i moved back to the UK,and reretted it ever since.I've spoken to a few people, and read a few threads from people who regretted returning home too early.
If you enjoy Oz,and it was the place you wanted to live, you've done the hard bit so i would try as hard as i could to secure the position you want.
just behind you tra completed just waiting for application to be acknowledged then case worker neds, police check hoping to move september time to brisbane what about you
Hope to get over as soon as possible, but imagine it will be towards the end of the year,We also are looking at Brisbane/Gold coast area, but nothing is set in stone yet.

[spot on m8 i,ve been tiling on & of for over 15 years each time the backside falls out of the building trade i also drop out. anyway came off the sites again last year n tried to go alone again but when advertised in local paper there must have been 15-20 tilers in .i blame these week or so courses n like you know tiling in a classroom doesnt give the same experience as tiling a prewar council house with years of wee wee on walls or floors that are almost moonscape.this is one of my reasons for moving to oz. sorry about the rant but i feel much better now.
=pommy tiler;200111]To anyone thinking of doing a tiling course and being fully skilled etc after 8 weeks are dreaming ! You cannot and will not be taken on by any decent firm after such little exp . . . . . Ive been in the game for 24 years ,have my own company and would never take on a tiler after little exp ! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . These courses are to line the pockets of the people who run them . . . . Save your money. . .they are not what they are cracked up to be . . . Exp is the key word . . . . If you aint got that i doubt you will get a full time job with a decent firm
Tiling in a classroom
Isnt enough . . . . ![/quote]
i agree with the experience i have 21 years as a carpet fitter but the guy isn't saying he will be good enough after 8 weeks he just wants to get into a trade and doesn't know where to start
i don't blame any of you defending your trades and experience but we all started somewhere and had no experience the 8 week course would be a start for him and if hes gauranteed a job at the end of it(doesn't say what sort of job maybe with someone more skilled?)then its a start for him
we have to be careful with posts because they can easily be misunderstood because you not sure what tone they are set in personelly i hope we all get out there and achieve the lifestyles were looking for
ps i'm off to the pub now lol
we have just got our visas today and my oh is a floor layer.
he does all the floorcoverings , not just carpets,
he does, safety flooring, amitico, karndean, laminate, etc.
he also worked for karndean in technical services, installiing shrowrooms for shops & training fitters up and down the country.
he is hoping to go into commercial vinyl installation?
does anyone know anything aboout this in Brissy?
cheers
michelle

Thanks for the support mate!it looks like i'm going for the wrong job,all the intelligent talk and support seems to be coming from the carpetfitters!
I maybe 40 but i've got a good 20-25 years left in me to learn a trade and earn a half decent living.I realise that whatever i settle on is going to take time, and you'd have to be a real mug to think you could become fully skilled after a couple of weeks.
