Thanks for that, big help.Maybe you would be able to advise,as a carpetfitter yourself, would 2 years be a realistic time to become competant at carpetfitting.Obviously i wouldn't be an expert or anything in this time, but would it be enough time to be confident and quick enough at most aspects of the job.

Will certainly look into this as a trade though, due to the good reports posted by other users.

depends on your own ability but yes 2 years would be plenty to get you fitting most areas to an high standard the rest you could learn from others and as you go with the internet you can find sites that tell you how things should and shouldn't be fitted

To anyone thinking of doing a tiling course and being fully skilled etc after 8 weeks are dreaming ! You cannot and will not be taken on by any decent firm after such little exp . . . . . Ive been in the game for 24 years ,have my own company and would never take on a tiler after little exp ! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . These courses are to line the pockets of the people who run them . . . . Save your money. . .they are not what they are cracked up to be . . . Exp is the key word . . . . If you aint got that i doubt you will get a full time job with a decent firm

Tiling in a classroom
Isnt enough . . . . !

I realise that but you have to start somewhere!

As i said on a previous thread, the company i would be training with have a tie-in with a local large tiling firm, and if you do the 8 week full time course they guarantee a full time tiling position at the end.I would then hopefully do a couple of years to gain experience before moving to Oz.

All i was asking was if there is anyone who could advise on the need for tilers in Oz,and the wage, for when i'm experienced enough and up to speed. If there isn't much call or earnings aren't too hot, then i'd look at something else like carpetfitting.

Im currently applying to emigrate, and i work as a carpet fitter, Ive had figures mentioned to me of $8000- $12,000 per month which is a lot but beware carpet fitting is an though physical job, which involves a lot of hours of hard graft, but the rewards are sometimes fantasic, You have got to plan for the "what ifs " though, what if : you do you back in, you develop water on the knee, tendonitis in your wrists and elbows etc, etc.

Realistically fitting past 55 years of age is an unlikely option so be careful with any money you make! Its a scary thought for me that at the age of 27, if im lucky i could contiue floor laying for 20 years, but what do i do affter that??

Just make sure you dont shed out a shed load of hard earned, to then have a relitavley short time at it.

i'm a carpet fitter and i looked into qaulifications by a national body but they are not recognized at all the TRA assesing body won't recognize them as a few on here have found out as well im lucky i got through just before pathway d was removed my point being if i was you i would train in a trade over in oz because you would probably get a job easier and as the pay goes i bet tilers arn't far behind carpet fitters
hope this helps
What stage are you at in your application? It would be interesting to hear from a fellow carpet fitter going through the same process, Im currently working in Uttoxeter which isnt a million miles from you!
