Guest scots-in-oz! Posted February 23, 2008 Share Posted February 23, 2008 I've noticed that there seems to be lots of us nurses on PiO , with more joining the site all the time! (everyone trying to escape the nhs?! lol!) Thought I'd start a thread for us nurses to keep in touch, and offer support to one another! We could keep up to date about where we're at in the LONG process of visa applications, and help one another out with any info. Or even if your a nurse in Oz already, please feel free to say hi. I'm sure you'll hold a wealth of info for us still in the uk. So I'll start! I'm a children's nurse, married, with two daughters, aged 13 & 10. At this point in time I've applied for my 175 skilled independent visa, and we have our meds this week! House yet to go up for sale, but will hopefully be on the market in the next 2 weeks. We're hoping to head to the Gold Coast, July/Aug, but this depends on visa & house sale. I have no job there yet, but have submitted my cv th Queensland health, plus a couple of individual hospitals in the GC. Waiting for them to get back to me! Right, your turn! Im a community mental health nurse and in May I'll celebrate my 26th year of nursing. I'm here on a 136 visa (this changed to 175), I'm married with 2 children aged 13 and 8. This year is my 18th year of nursing (including training!). Have done mainly elderly care for last 10 years or so. Currently working in a semi secure dementia unit for 35 residents and a locked unit for 17 clients. Happy to help in any way and this is a great idea to have a NURSES THREAD! Perhaps Tim could put a nurses in Oz section up for us. It would be great to be able to come on here and get all the advice you need. Still currently in UK but not for much longer house sold and just waiting on completion date before we book flights. Will be living in Victoria and working in NSW as very close to border. I've got 21 years NHS service and its not the same great institution i joined back then. All seems a bit daunting at moment but can't wait to get there now. Applied for 175 6th Dec. Waiting for QNC registration applied end of December. Have been a nurse for 25 years in May !! wow I really need a break from the NHS !! Hoping to go to Redland Bay/Wellington point area outside Brisbane. House valued last week and going up for sale next week. We can't wait to go. I am a Physiotherapy Technician (7years) and my partner a staff nurse (20 years) We had a fantastic 5 weeks in Oz last year - loved brisbane and most of the surrounding ares. I am a staff nurse been nursing since 1981 (not bad as never wanted to be a nurse):goofy: I with my husband wilf(he works in the water industry) & 2 out 3 children heading to Brisbane in the next few months Have a job at the Princess Alexandra going on 457 visa working towards PR. Just need to sort out some rental. A quick note regarding registration when applying to QNC ensure you send application as special/signed for delivery that way you can track they have it. They apparently told me my application was never received had sat patiently for 12 weeks waiting :arghh:but within 30mins of me saying had been received by them and signed for they found it. We currently have our sights set on moving to WA, we have three young boys and just want a better life for them. My work is in child protection so we are hopeful that we will both be able to secure jobs over there and are due to attend the expo in Leeds at the beginning of April. This thread is a great idea, before we started this whole process, we had no idea how many hoops there would be to jump through. My husband works in IT. We have 3 sons; 20, 15 and 10. We are just at the starting point with the agent and are having lots of panic struck moments like 'Oh my god...what are we doing'! and we've just started!!!!! We are very undecided on what area we should go to but seem to think it will be Perth or Gold Coast......it all seems unreal. Anyway, I think this thread for nurses is an excellent idea then we don't have to bore other people silly! I've millions of questions; main one at present is 'When should I start applying for jobs and how do I do it'? This will obviously help us decide where to go. Or is it far too early, would imagine I would have to have visa or register with a state before employers would even look at me, but as I said I don't really know what I'm doing at moment...just going with the flow! How many people can say they feel like that about their days work. some days feel honoured to be part of a very personal event. Im 47, a late starter! Start work tomorrow at Sir Charles Gairdner hospital on the neurosciences ward, two orientation days mon and tues. Very nervous but looking forward to it at the same time. Guest sharon Posted February 24, 2008 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Gday, Ive been on the gold coast for 3 months working on a neurosurgical ward at the Allamanda hospital. So far everything is going well the staff are really friendly, ward manager is great as in off duty and stuff as I have two kids millie 5 Harry 4. Staffing levels are great I have just come in from a late shift and had 5 patients and none of them were really unwell. Having said that I was one of the few who wasnt leaving the UK because they are disillusioned with the NHS, I actually loved my job in the UK, I worked as a specialist nurse with patients who have had a subarachnoid haemorrhage for 2 days a week and worked for 2 days with the critical care outreach team. so although the ward is nice it is not very challenging and for anyone who is used to working as an autonomous practitioner they may find that it is very much going backwards as in you cant do anything without the doctors strict orders and this can be frustrating as well as possibly deskilling. but it is only early days yet and for now the job suits me as I can focus more on settling into life down under. Which I have to say has so far been a lot easier than I was expecting, my kids have just took to Aussie life with no problems ( mind you what kid wouldnt when your at the beach most days and in and out of the pool.) Also the Allamanda is a private hospital so I dont know if things are the same in the public sector. Word of warning anyone heading to wellington point, Cleveland areas, my friend has been working at Greenslopes nad she said it is worst than in the uk, on most shifts she has 10 patients on her own with a care assisstant and most of them are on a PCA and need assistance with all their ADLs she also said morale is really low all the staff are moaning and looking for jobs elswhere, as is she, she has just had an interview at the redland bay hospital. I do trust her opinion as I worked with her for 7 years in the UK and she is a hard working positive and motivated nurse, so BEWARE. good luck to everyone sharon Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest BRAMBLE Posted February 24, 2008 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Hello all, I am a critical care nurse (37),husband an ODP (41) we have two children 7 & 3 and hoping to move to a critical care post in Perth at sir charles gairdner hospital. We have just put our house on the market and the first viewer has offered the full asking price and so we are in shock! It's all going to happen very quickly now and I feel sick with excitment. We have been on holiday to Perth before on holiday which was a massive culture shock! So all being well we will be down under in a few weeks. I also love everything here in the UK and I am not unhappy. However I do get fed up with long, cold dark winters and not being able to spend time outdoors. I am looking forward to some sunshine and in patricular we are looking forward to our sons health improving. Our son has very bad allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma and eczema. This dramatically inproved in Perth despite the fact it was there worst time of the year for hay fever. Anyway, currently working as a heart failure nurse specialist in the community, but prior to that all my experience has been in secondary care. Waiting for a case officer currently. Hoping to move early next year - everything crossed. Desperately trying to get my Masters dissertation finished in the hope that it will improve my job prospects when I get there. Guest LANNYLOO1974 Posted February 24, 2008 Share Posted February 24, 2008 hi there! what a good idea! i am a paediatric nurse with 15 years experience who is hoping to send the skilled migrant independent visa very soon!! as soon as i get my skills assessment with the anmc approved. my husband is a baker and is also got a skilled trade so we are awaiting his tra results as well. we are hoping to go the perth within the year if all goes to plan:biglaugh: i am just a little concerned over child care as i have 2 at school now and a 3 year old who is at preschool but it seems to be a bit hit and miss regarding childcare and if i have to go back on the wards!!:arghh: shifts may be a problem but i suppose we will cross that bridge when we come to it....................way.................... down the line lianne ! Started this process about this time last year and am going down the State Territory Nominated Independent route (visa 176). Just waiting now to find out if we are going to be granted the visa ???? I first trained as an Enrolled Nurse in 1982 (where have all the years gone), worked as an Enrolled nurse for 6 years then left nursing to have babies and look after them. Decided to return to nursing in 2004 but had to start from scratch again and completed my Degree in 2006.............felt like I had never been away. On qualifying, I took up a post in Acute Medicine (not for the faint hearted) but now work in a nurse led Dermatology unit. So far I have had a telephone interview for Townsville and the offer of various jobs around New South Wales but my heart is set on Victoria (family there). I have applied for two jobs in Victoria but so far unsuccesful with one and awaiting a reply from the second one. I am Tracey (31) and have been qualified as a paediatric nurse for 10 years, We are currently just waiting for our visa (fingers crossed) and are planning to go to Adelaide June/July time, house sale willing of course. OH Pete will become a stay at home dad for a while until the children are settled and then will decide what to do, he is currently a driving instructor. We have 4 children aged 7, 5, 2 and 7 months. My husband and I are planning on taking our 13month old to Armidale as I (hopefully) have a job waiting - just waiting for letter of confirmation.
