Steve you dont require a roofing licence in Perth to work for the tile company's like you do in queensland and NSW, so a bit of good new there for you. Dan
Jason, how much will a roofing contractor earn in Brisbane? Hard to answer but i will try and give you a guide.
A roofer who works direct with super (pension) paid working on new build works will get about $900 but normally has to get himself to site.
A subby without a roofing license working for another subby will get up to $30 and hour which will more than likely include gst (vat) at 10%, and will need to do a bas statement and no hols and get himself to work.
A subcontractor with a license can work for the tile manufactures and employ people, so therefore earn a lot more, but they all seem to be still on the tools and running there own 6-8 man gangs earning about $2000+. In brisbane all subbies work for the various tile company's on a labour only basis, so no supply and fix, but will have to provide tile hoist $9000 compresser, a couple of compressed air nail guns, a couple of circular saw's and also a few tile cutters which are like big nibblers, they dont use styll saw's here. Also nails, clips, sand and cement. They get $8 m2 for tiling and $12 for cutting and ridge. Also new work is hard yakka. I know of 1 mob who are 14 strong and do 2-3 houses a day which are 300m2 big with 65m or so hips and valleys. They have a gang follow them around bedding and pointing.
I have been fairly lucky so far as i have been doing repairs for a guy, and he has been paying me $40 an hour with some work on a price, but he has ran out of work recently and i have had to do some new build. They do things differently over here and i am on a learning curve to there methods. I feel like an apprentice again.
I am currently appling for my roofers licence which and will have to get my skills accessed AGAIN as my city in guilds, NVQ level 3, 18 years experience and also a passed TRA (to get in the country) seem to count for nothing.
Mind you sun is shining and i earnt $550 today repointing ridge.
Hope this helps a bit, PM if you want any help.
Dan
Well done Dan you seem to be givin em sh8t as they say !!!
Looks like i,ll have to start doing some excercise to keep up with them , JESUS 3 houses a DAY!
Is there a reason for not needing a Licence in perth , and does it mean anyone can work direct for the tile companys I,E General builders........(is it like being an approved contractor).???
Thanks Steve,

Dan,
My OH is a roof tiler and slater of 24 years and we are looking to go to Brisbane but will also look elsewhere. We did have a company to sponsor us but last week they said due to the financial commitment they would not be able to do it as they were only a small company. We were gutted as you can imagine. Whats it like with you over there, do you have any advice on where to look for any other companies as we feel we are back to where we started.
Hey guys i am not trying to put anyone off, i am only trying to be honest and as it is. Brisbane is a great place to be. Just a bit of paperwork to sort and it will be fine. I havnt had any problems finding work. Not sure about getting sponcership tho, maybe try australian yellow pages. The tile manufactures are CSR, Bristile and Boral, maybe worth an email??????? Dan
I am sure Michael will get Michelle to post and re afferm what i have said.

Hi ya Dan!!
Some peeps on here don't think honesty is the best policy-they want you to say all's fab!! y'know!!
Michael's been working as full time casual for $26-28 p/hr. If there's no work, jobs not ready etc you go home with no pay.
Idoubt in all honesty if you'll get a sponsor with a roofing co cos they're loads of roofers-don't know if you agree Dan?? & they don't want to pay more than they absolutely have to!!!
Saying that there is work around & Michael has never been asked to e train or produce evidence of his certificates.
