practical and theory tests - electrical fitter

hi. has anybody gone through these tests and can give some advice on what is involved?
i work as a maintenance electrician in the uk, and the jobs in perth i have looked at want you to be endorsed as an electrical fitter. i have quite a lot of info on the artc certificate process but not much on the next step i.e. getting the electrical license. can you do a short course (like 16th edition?) or do you just have to take the exam and see how you get on?
any help greatly appreciated. also someone told me you have to do the electrical mechanic license first before you can do the electrical fitter one? thanks.

Hi do you mean vetassess or do you mean the tests you have to take in oz. If it is vetassess you mean if you go on the website it will tell you what you need and how to get started. If you mean the licence once you get in oz, sorry but we are not there yet we still have to pass the practical. Good luck

Hi there. Can I ask where you're up to in the process, will help me to outline what you need to do, very long winded complicated process!

Basically though, a fitter can do electrical work, but in some states cannot terminate. So the best licence to go for is the mechanics, or sometimes known as A grade. This will allow you to do everything, installation etc. Be aware though, if ARTC think you're only skilled in one area, they will not pass you. We're in the middle of it all, hubby failed ARTC (was maintenance electrician) and because he doesn't know how to repair/fix motors, we've failed, so now going down the fitters route, just to get work.

If you've got your TRA (or vetassess as it is now), once you're in Oz (or if you've got an oz address you can use), apply for your ARTC. This requires loads MORE info than TRA (where we fell down, we just sent same info). Typically it runs into 20/30 pages of info, and you have to list all tasks you've done, can do. Many people enclose the entire C&G syllabus and even include photos of them at work, as well as references from employers etc. Once you've got that, you're set to go. Depending on which state you want to go will dictate what courses/exams you need to do to support that. SA is the easiest, quickest way, as there's just a wiring regs course (you can do correspondance then just fly in for the exam). This is the quickest way, once you've got ARTC, wiring regs in SA, you can go along and apply for your licence. They take your photo and send it onto you a few weeks later, although they will give you the licence number so you can start work straight away. Each state operates differently, however there is the ability to transfer between states, so for example if you want to go to WA, you'd need to do a 16 week course plus 3 exams & ARTC to get your licence. The SA course can be done in 5 days if you're there to attend and only 1 multiple choice exam which is fairly easy. If you want more info let me know, we've been in the thick of this for months, so can tell you from experience what a minefield it is. Wouldn't want anyone else to be in the mess we are.

Sorry, I can't explain plainly what you need to do when you arrive in WA, as we did ours in SA. All we know is there's a 16 week course at the TAFE, and 3 exams to sit. No idea of content etc.

You also need to get your ARTC, whatever state you're settling in.

Once you have ARTC & appropriate certs from exams, for WA you contact EnergySafety
who will organise your licence.

Good luck

Hi there. Have you checked out the britishexpats.com website? If you search under Forums > by occupation > electrician, you'll see there dozens of people in the same boat as you, and all sharing info.

the system has changed since we got our TRA, it's now done via VETASSESS for your skills assessment, so I'm not familiar with the process, but I thought they'd gone down the route of you needing to have qualifications to pass ? Also, the C&G course is a 4 year part time (I know there's a minimum 90 hours study you're required to have undertaken to qualify).

Hope this isn't bad news for you guys, but trust me, you'll get a more knowledgeable response on that site from loads of sparky's either in the same boat, or just gone through it.

Good luck guys,

Karen

Hi Karen.
I've just read your thread regarding electrical licenses and was wondering if you could help as I am totally confused. I work as a maintenance engineer and this includes electrical maintenance, installation, test and repair of industrial equipment. I have been classed as a general electrician through the TRA for visa application purposes but wouldn't know where to start with domestic wiring and the like, I'm more at home with motors, starters, controllers, panels and the like. My apprenticeship was of the informal type and so I am not CITB, SELECT, or any of the other ones registered. I do have my City & Guilds C Course, PAT, 16th Edition and Electricity At Work course certificates along with 19 years experience. We hope to go to SA in the near future - waited 6 months so far to get a case officer. Can you tell me what sort of license I would need and how I go about getting one to do my job in Oz? I didn't realise that I would need one. Would I be able to do any of it before I go? Any help or advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Bill
