Hi Tom

Looks like you need an Australian Business Number (ABN).
Anyone in business or sub contracting needs one.

Have a look at this page on the Australian Tax Office site.

ABN essentials

Cheers

Hi Tom,
As Tyke says Australian business number(equivalent to CIS4) in uk is what u need if you wish to work on a self employed basis which is what most of the work is, also a tax file number ,otherwise you will pay 48% of your earnings on tax, both can be done online and only take approx 7-10 days to come through but you need to be in oz to apply as they send it to the oz address you submit.
other than that mate all you need is a job and im sure you wont have much problem in securing that
anything else i can help u with just pm me
where in oz u heading???
billy

Hi mate, im a spark working in Cairns and im sure you'l be coming up here at some point to see the reef. You'l have no problem finding work, its boom times here as far as building goes. I would say 50% of the guys on site here where thongs(flip flops) bloody mad if yo ask me. Health and safety, whats that!
Have a great time!

Hi mate, houses going up all over the place. Most of the big stuff is all concrete. There are block homes everywhere but also on the cheaper end of the market they are tilt slab. Concrete slab goes down then the rest of the house walls arrive again all concrete and all they do is bolt them together. Had a spell last year where walls got put in the wrong place which ended up with no windows in bedrooms. Not good when the roof has gone on! Guys had to sit there with grinders cutting in holes for windows. Wood seems to be coming a thing of the past aswell. Roof truses are all going metal along with stud walls.
I better stop hogging this thread!!!
Give us a shout if you want to know anything else but i will say any trades are laughing if they come to Cairns!

What about a BSA licence.
I'm sure it was made mandatory that every building sub contractor has to have a licence & if a builder is discovered employing an unlicenced contractor he will get fined as well as the subbie.

It's not particularly hard to get a BSA licence if you are a legitmate contractor & I think it's $5K worth of assets other than your family car, house, work vehicle & tools.
Basically you need to come up with a minimum $5k to repair or fix a job if it goes bad.
