Me and the wife have been to Australia a few times and love the place - so we've been thinking about moving out there. One of the many reservations we have is the job market, has anyone out there got first hand experience of trying to get a job in IT, not to get too technical but in Database development/Design ?
I've looked on the many job websites and there seem to be plenty of jobs, but how many other people would I be competing against - do they prefer Aussies for the jobs ?!?
Hubby is a web developer and there do seem to be a lot of IT jobs out there, not sure if they prefer aussies or not, so will be interested to see what others think too. Have you had your ACS assessment yet? We are thinking of Melbourne or Sydney as that seems to be where the most IT jobs are.
We're also thinking of Melbourne or Sydney - no ACS yet but I can't imagine it being that hard to pass, just a pain to gather the required information ?
Hubby has a degree in Applied Science but most modules were computer based, programming, databases, graphics, realtime systems etc, so we are just waiting for a transcript which will show all the modules (he can't remember them all plus we thought it would be a useful doc to have for the future) from the Uni, but still waiting despite posting cheque off to them last Tuesday!
We are probably going to use Peter at Ptlabs as an agent as he specialises in IT and used to work for the ACS so knows how they work. He was recommended to us on this site and the couple of emails he has sent us seems like a decent bloke. He will be able to tell us when we can confirm the modules of the degree whether hubbys degree would be recognised as an IT degree, if not we would have to go down the RPL (recognised prior learning) route which could take longer. He seems to think it looks positive but it's frustrating waiting for some paperwork in the post to find out for definite.
We are hoping that if you have the skills and the experience (plus IT skills in demand over there) that they don't have a bias for aussies. We are going to wait til we get the visas (fingers crossed!) before sending hubbys c.v. off and cross that bridge when we get to it!
Good luck to you! Be interested in seeing how you get on.

Hi
My OH is a systems architect/designer. He has had his skills successfully assessed by the ACS. About 50 hours of work went into putting the assessment together. He has applied for over 200 jobs off seek.com in the hope of getting sponsored which would get us out there quicker than waiting for the skilled visa to come through. Out of 200 job applications, he has had 3 interviews who have said he is over qualified and has 2 second interviews in Feb some time. He has had an offer in Melbourne, but we dont want to go there, so didnt accept it. We really want to go to Queensland. From the research we have done, sponsored jobs are really difficult to get, but most people have replied saying they would be interested if we were in Australia. So maybe, when you get there, there are plenty of jobs. We'll have to wait and see. It's really frustrating, but hopefully, it will be worth it in the end.
I'm in a slightly different position as I'm only here for a year and looking for contract work but I was previously a systems developer and more recently worked in a project office. I've been looking for 3 weeks now, which doesn't sound long unless you're out here on your own!. I've had interest in my CV but only 2 interviews so far. Other people I've spoke to say the market is pretty good so hopefully with a little patience it should be OK to get a job here (I'm in Melbourne at the moment).
I'm thinking of studying for a project management course over here in the UK before I get over to OZ in the next 12 months and was wondering if you knew what kind of project certificates / qualifications are recognised over there in the jobs market? and what the salaries are like etc......
