Nursing advise please.

Hi All

Would like to start a career in nursing and would like to know is it worth starting a course in the uk or would I be wasting time as it would not count in Oz.

Thanks for your Time

Emma

Hi Emma,

It is worth you doing your training in the UK and then you could apply for a graduate programme in Aus once you qualify. I have heard of some people doing their elective prac in Aus (they've organised this themselves), which could also be an option to see if you liked it.

Your UK qualification would definitely be valid over here and they are always after more nurses! Also, check out the cost involved of doing your training over here- can be pricey if you don't come over on the right visa for studying/working!! Research the University/ies where you might like to settle over here to see if any would accept you as a 'newbie' to both the country and nursing. There may some overseas student places. Also, it's easy to transfer your state qual to another state if you move. Don't forget there'll likely be 'tie-ins' where you train i.e. you train there then work there for so many years after qualifying. From my own experience (and just my humble opinion!!), I trained in the UK back in the days of the ark and the Uk training is probably superior to what I see happening over here really but I'm not in general nursing, I'm in mental health; plus things could have gone rapidly downhill since I was in the UK!! Basically, it boils down to you and how you want to spend the next 3/4 years: either waiting/planning to come over after training for 3 or 4 years or the planning/expense of coming over here to train/live. Good Luck and enjoy the ride, whatever your decisionSharron

Hi Shariliz

I too trained with the ark, so much so that when I did my skills assessment the had problems finding a syllabus. I'm also trained in mental health and do think that specialised training in this field makes a difference from what I've seen.

Thanks

Hi All

Thanks for your advise.

We will be coming over on my husbands visa (hopefully if we hear something about the pathway D)

So hopefully we will be coming over with permanent visa.

So how will that work, will it be really expensive to train in Oz.

Thanks once again.

Emma

If you come over on a permanent resident visa, that will be alot better (i.e cheaper!!) for all sorts of costs inc. education; benefits (like health insurance, loans, mortgages) etc.
Someone like Alan Collett is more likely to know but I think the temp visa route, like the 457 we came on, is a bit of a swizz and you have to do a repeat performance for the PR visa(of course, IMHO!!!!); apply for the PR visa- alot less restrictions/exemptions when you get here. Although it's got the word 'permanent', it doesn't mean- if you dislike it here- you can't go back!! If I was starting this process now (of course with the benefit of hindsight, I would be more patient on the UK side and get here on a PR)
If I've understood the visa process stuff (after now having applied for PR after the 457!!), there's no diff in terms of costs as well for your sponsoring employer either!!! I don't think there's even a process time difference either!! We were led to believe the 457 would be quicker.......some folk have gotten their PRs in just the same time frame; it depends on the, what seem to be yearly, changes in points/protocol/requirements (i.e. the English test!!), the processing and work schedules. Swings and roundabouts.
Good Luck!!
