Smile 3 year or 4 year teaching degree

Hello, can anyone help to clarify the Teaching degree situation for me. I have been told that my 3 year BA (Hons) degree in primary education will not be recognised in Australia and that i need to have done 4 years and have a PGCE. I have QTS in the uk and have taught for 5 years full time.

Thanks
Ruth

Hi there,

I'm afraid that some of the information you have been given is correct - your three year degree will not be recognised in order to pass the skills assessment or registration process here in Australia. However, not all of the information is right - you do not need to have completed a 4 year degree and a pgce!

I came to Australia on my skills as a teacher and failed my skills assessment because I had completed the 3 year degree the same as yourself. I had also go 6 years teaching experience at the time. I questioned the assessment body (then AEI-NOOSR) and confirmed that if I went back to university for a year, part or full time, then I would pass the assessment. I enrolled as a part time student and did my Masters degree in a year (very hard work I must add I was still teaching full time as well) and a month being given my letter confirming I would graduate I passed the skills assessment.

I know there are at least 2 other members on the forum in the same position as yourself, one wants to use their skill to get a visa, the other wishes to get registration as a teacher over here once they have migrated using their partners skill.

If I can answer any more questions please feel free to send me a pm and I'll help if I can. All I can say at this stage is don't give up! I didn't and I start my first teaching post tomorrow!

Thank you for that info. I did start a Post grad diploma course but stopped it because we will be in Aus before it ends (it's 2 years part time) however i think i get a certificate after 1 year so prehaps i could go back and finish it. Would that solve the problem do you think.
However i am a special ed teacher so the certificate will be in special needs teaching!
Thanks Ruth

Hello, I work as a maths/science secondary teacher in the uk.
My bsc in Education was a two year shortened course as i had previous credit for a three year bsc in applied sports science that I had completed previously.
Would this situation cause me a problem when hoping to emigrate and work as a teacher in Oz?

If you have done more than 4 years at uni and have qualified teaching status then your pretty much ok. You do need to meet the work experience part of the criteria as well though!

You could consider bridging qualifications via Australian off campus study, in UK. Varies from state to state but education faculties in Oz should know exactly what you need to study for registration etc.

Cheers Andrew
