brickies

i work here (Scotland) as a subbie brickie in a 2 +1 gang and we work on a measure. it seems from what i can gather that everything is done on an hourly rate over there. can anyone confirm or deny as i prefer to work on a measure. also where is the best places for work ie wages and quantity, everyone seems to think bris or perth. is there any brickies on here in darwin or cairns? cheers

hi mate
i was on price work in england and was hoping to do the same here in oz, im living in perth (nor) and at the moment on day work doing commercial work. nearly all the adverts in perth are for daywork, average $250 a day, now xmas is out of the way i will try to get in with someone who is willing to show me the ozzie way in building houses then ill be off on my own, ive spoke to several brickies and they say they average $360-$400 a day (a hard day). will mention though to any brickies heading to perth that in yesterdays paper they are basically saying that there is a lot of brickies compaired to work available. so most work is taken by contractors who then advertise for brickies on daywork.

weather in darwin and cairns apparently is far too humid to work your ass off everyday and that came from a mate of mine who has just returned from cairns to perth, as gazza says the work on housing where most price work was being done is now slowing down and they are reducing the prices due to the ammount of brickies around
ehhh gazza thought you were a mate an yer leavin me to work with suicide dave oan ma own lol
by the way u do a great chicklen burger on the barbie bud

thanks for that info, you know what its like, just trying to work out figures and things to see how much i can afford (read 'she can afford'!!) on a house etc. should be there around middle of the year, can't make up my mind between bris and perth tho. loads of brickies you say, is there still enough work going for everyone? i think it's starting to slow down hear in the uk (certainly on the sites at least, houses just not selling). thanks again guys;-)

brickies up for a chat

Hello fellow brickies. Hope to be in Perth sometime in 2008 with my wife and two kids as I could not face another winter here. I work for a groundworker doing trenchblock footings and I have`nt been out of wellies for 18 months , summer included. If you get on the pricework I hope it`s not hard to get a good labourer, all the good ones might have gone to the mines for the money and I doubt they have got the readymix or do you know different. I was over in Perth a couple of years ago, staying at my brothers house on a Xmas break and the gauge for b/wk is 430mm for 5 courses and a brick is 230mm long, so try and get your head around that. Profiles are nearly always used there, even for internal backing up as there is no cavity insulation that I know of, or DPC.The first few weeks maybe awkward till you get used to it, try and jump in with the right fellas. If you have any tips they will be welcome, nice talking to you. Paul.
