what is your daily/M2 rate. Is it competative. If it isn't you're not going to keep your staff. If it is, then you need to look at other aspects of your management/business.

We have paid $8k aus to fix an installers vehicle after he crashed it & his insurance company wouldn't pay due to him not telling the truth about his drink driving record.
I lent him my own personal truck for 8 weeks, without him paying me a cent for its usage & he was also not replacing my $70aus worth of fuel every week that it came back to me without.
He doesn't pay his accounts with my boss & my friends businesses & they were only letting him get away with it because he worked for us.
We were dealing with the debt collectors most weeks for him.
Unfortunately there would be only 50% of flooring installers in Australia that actually look at themselves as being a small business & running it professionally & not blaming the retailers for all their problems.
For some reason in most installers minds, the retail business is the one doing it easy, making all the money & ripping the staff off.
It's easy blaming everyone else except the people that are actually causing the problem...
I'm an installer, I did my 4 years as an apprentice, did all my TAFE & never ever had my boss pay all my TAFE fees or carry me like all our apprentices & staff get know, yet I am greatfull for everything I get & I also know both sides of the fence....
I have had many discussions with staff in my role as a manager & it always amuses me what people think they are worth.
Another problem is most young people have never lived in an era when it was tough, they haven't experienced recession or doing it tough financially like there parents did.
They wouldn't even think far enough ahead that life, jobs etc may become scarce & you will have to be actually good at your job & not just turn up & be paid.
Most peoples financial problems can be traced back to their spendings not their earnings.
I will not get bitter about all these things as if you do, you really shouldn't be in business as you always have to be positive.
Hi,my OH is a floor layer, has been for 19 years(mostly commercail/industrial).we are coming for a visit to brisbane in april and he wants to have a look at the work situation so where should he start?at the moment we run our own business and he earns between £1500/£2500 per week,so what are his chances of anything like that in brisbane?we do have quite a good standard of living here at the moment(at least until half of east london moves into our area)we want to keep that up-what's the chances?i've got a bit carried away, where shall he try to look for work?:).Gizmoe,i know how you feel,he knows what it's like having the wrong sorts of people working for you-i've lost count of the times that blokes just don't turn up for the job, twice we let them have full use of the company van and we had so many speeding fines and parking tickets that we had to pay for and bad workmanship that ended up costing us all because we hired them because we had so much work to get finished(i could go on).as you say,you just haveto be positive!
Hiya just wondering if there is going to be any floor/carpet layers moving to the Brisbane area, let me know as I will put you in touch with some one that is looking for fitters

hi sarah we will be there on 1st april . what a day to arrive, i will pm you to see about work.got to go and pack now. x. lol
i went to master kelwins head office last year on the gold coast and they said they needed fitters badly..........They said they will take me on, but my visa is now held up because of the tra changes in september..............really gutted as i should have been there by now if i just sent my tra a week earlier.........I was quoted the same figures of $2000 to $3000 a week by mk, but they did say i would have to do alot of highrise work and travelling, but i do that here in uk so that don't bother me.........They said they would team me up with other fitters so this is a good way to make new friends too.....and of course australia has not got so many stair cases which fitters hate, so work should be easier in many ways and earning like £800 a week over there is more or less what i earn here, and with the better lifestyle this is why i want to go....just can't wait any longer, i really hope they sort this tra thing soon
