hi luke
it seems that it is quite hard to find out much about bricklaying in oz, & alot of bricklaying posts seem to go unanswered. we are heading for SA (maybe vic) & i have had trouble finding things out like wages (with all this talk of cost of living ive been getting abit worried), & if there are many jobs there.
all i can assume is that they gave us a visa quite quickly (3months) so they must need us, & i look on realestate.com to see where the new houses are being built. As with here it doesnt seem that many brickies advertise, ive heard its more a case of turn up on site they see what you can do if your still there at the end of the day you`ve got a job (dont know how much truth is in this).
my hubby is more of a general builder specialising in renovation & i cant find out if there is much call for this or if its all site work. suppose we`ll see when we get there

G'day all brickies.
My oh is a brickie. We have been in Melbourne (Mornington Peninsula) for almost a year and there is plenty of work.
Wages vary greatly, depending wether you want to work on your doorstep or are prepared to travel into the city. So you would be looking at between $900 pw upto around $1600 pw.
As someone has said, jobs here aren't always advertised, it's just a case of turning up on site and asking for a start, although our local paper does have ads for brickies most weeks.
If anyone wants any more info, pm me.
Good luck!
Lesley

Hi Janette, I've sent you a private message, hope that's ok?!
Hi there, we are looking at moving over to Oz this time next year - OH is a joiner, just wondered what work was like for joiners (obviously your OH will know)!! Were originally looking at Brisbane but the humidity and stories of funnel webs, redbacks and snakes in back gardens has prompted us to look elsewhere!!! Also any advice on houseprices in the new estates, would like 5 bed if possible on largish plot. Brisbane was around 580,000 for that, whats it like in comparison please?

Hi, hubby been a bricklayer for about 19 years, and we originally considered Perth, as heard there were lots of jobs there from others on this site. Decided on Queensland in the end though, as heard Brisbane area was nice, and housing not quite as expensive as Sydney, Perth and Melbourne. Richard phoned three people for jobs, and got offered all of them; the bloke he works for now is flooded with work building houses. On the houses he has been working on so far, joiners have put up a timber frame, and they just build an outside skin, so he is also in the shade half the time, as the roof already on! I'm sorry I don't know about Sydney, but there is great demand for new housing here, around Brisbane and the Gold Coast where we live, and a good brickie should be able to get work. My hubby is on $32 an hour plus superannuation of 9% paid by his employer; could earn more nearer the city. Good luck; any questions I'll pass on to OH! Joanne
hi, thanks for your reply, were originally looking at Brisbane, where exactly are you. We looked at Halpine Lakes, North Lakes, Coomera Waters and a few others. Were quite excited about Brisbane and the prospect of work but I have a huge snake phobia (sad I know...) and when OH looked there seemed to be quite a lot in peoples gardens. What are your experiences? As for work we have our own building & joinery business here but are happy to come out and work for someone else if the work is there? Does the company your OH works for employ joiners? Any idea of wage? Hubby has 13 years experience and is a real perfectionist, our company has a fantastic reputation here where we are, people think we're mad to give it up but just a lifestyle choice ...........

Hi, my hubby just works with a small gang of bricklayers; from what he says the housebuilders subcontract out each different part of the job, so sorry, no idea what a joiner would earn. It was impossible to find out a wage over the internet, as they just put a phone number in the paper, and very little detail. It's hard I expect giving up your company and reputation, but if you've done it before...
We live on the Gold Coast, Biggera Waters, which is about 20 minutes drive up from Surfers Paradise. Runaway Bay is our next suburb, and both are beautiful, but a lot of more elderly people live here. Had a drive around North Lakes; looked really nice, but then read on here the houses are very close together, and it's been dubbed "Little Britain"! There's loads of new houses being built at Coomera Waters, and a new shopping centre in that area; my husband works that way a lot, so may be good for work! A lot of people are moving to Coomera as it is so expensive now on the Gold Coast, so are going inland a bit; great for the motorway though. We're still looking at where we'd like to go, so no expert I'm afraid. Seem to get more for your money higher up than the Gold Coast, Redcliffe seems very popular, and looks really nice.
I haven't seen a snake as yet, but on the news a couple of days ago there were two stories about dogs saving their owners from being bitten, so I'm on the lookout; I think they avoid you though (not as much as I'd avoid them!). The lifestyle though, as you say, is the clincher; our kids can play out nearly everyday, picnics at the beach, and the scenery is a little bit nicer than in England!
Good Luck, sorry for the essay; hope it all goes your way
Joanne
Thank you for replying, don't mind essays, the more you say - the more we'll know.... how long have you been there? How old are your kids? Does it matter for work not living too close to Brisbane?
