Above award refers to the state award for your industry sector. Many if not most jobs are paid above award but not by a great amount.

Check the state gov web site you intend to live in and you'll find the award in the employment/jobs section (somewhere). Worth a read because perhaps more importantly it will define your working conditions etc like compulsory overtime minimum notice, sick pay, holidays, redundancy etc.

However new federal legis (WorkChoices) has been introduced which largely scrapped the award the system. Many employers will be basically sticking with it for now.
