Can anyone answer this question, as OH is a Motor Mechanic and his tools will be shipped, he wants to know if it would be cheaper to buy new one's here, or wait until we get there.
We know that the container will be arriving after us, so won't have tools to start a job ect.. Would it be more costly to buy in OZ?? If so where do you buy these from ? do you have specialised shops .....if so can someone please provise a link to we can check out the prices.
many thanks
Ally

hi there,i`m a mechanic too and only live down the road at malton,i`v had a little look into shipping rang a company in york(sasco-uk,01904 785700,he gave me a ruff quote of around £250 for a big snap on tool box, that was by ship and would take about 32 days to sail to freemantle, then he said if i wanted it there ASAP by plane it would be £2500.
i think it would be worth takeing his tools with you unless there halfords own tools.has he will know its probbly taken him all his life to gather up as they`re very expensive, take the tools which will make you the money once you get there and leave all the argos flat-pack stuff in the uk,again eithere send the stuff a mouth b4 you go or see if he can take a small plastic toolbox to tye him over there until his big tool box gets there,as that is what i`m going to do.
P.S we sould get togethere 4 a chat,would like that.Dave.

Hi there,
My hubby is a mechanic too and we sent his tools with the whole toolbox. He has built up a massive collection over the years and we worked out that we could not afford to replace. We did look at tools when we went for a rekkie and he was not impressed.
You will have to clean them well for shipping. We steam cleaned them and used brake cleaner.
Dont forget to insure them.
Goodluck
Debbie and Ken
bring your tools, far too expensive to buy new all over again, just clean everything well and send them with your shipping container, we did, in Aus there is usually a spare tool box in the workshop for overseas people to use until there container comes in. I shipped mine and glad I did + also got to use the spare tool box in the workshop! (im from scarborough, near you lot!!) Any of you coming to brissy and want a job with VW? Pete
Hi there
We are Tassie and loving it . Our son (16) came with us and he has got himself an apprenticeship with a VW garage in Hobart. Mechanics are in very short supply in Tasmania. He didnt have any tools but there is Snap on Tools over here and other good companies. I would think that it is expensive especially as you must have built up a huge tool kit! But everyone has beeen so good and have helped out where they can and he has even in a short time a good selection and dont forget it is different over here even if you work for someone you can claim tax back on all tools /workwear etc
Good luck on your new life Its great!!!!
Hi,
My friend works in logistics and found me a local chap in leicester that will send my tools by air. I'm in air con so i think my stuff might be a bit lighter (battery drills in plastic cases etc).
Its £40 security fee for first 100kg. Plus £2.10 for every kg of actual weight.
If i take it down to him on a thursday it will make fridays flight and at sydney airport within 7 days. I thought this could add up to quite a fee but one of my drills cost me £285 so its a no brainer for me.
They're called Maina International Consolidators, don't if you can search for a local International Consolidator and see what shows up????
Thanks for the useful info decided to stock up on a few bits here, going to get a new toolbox here and clean tools...to put into the container, going to buy some when we arrive in Melbourne, I know it will be more expensive but at least I will have something to start work with. Hopefully I shouldn't be too long without them and I don't want to start work straight away....
Cheers Pete for that, do you miss scarborough (I'm guessing not).....? off to Melbourne hopefully...but thanks for asking.
Andy

Good Luck in Melbourne. Dont forget to pop over to Tassie and take a look. Its great over here maybe a bit colder but the locals are friendly! House are cheaper at the moment but cant see them staying so low for much longer . The beaches are close and very unspoilt. Schools are good. Plenty to see and do
anyway take care
