Hi we are the terry's and I have been looking for employment in the plumbing/property maintenance sector. Have positive TRA for General Plumber and own a property maintenance business here in the UK, have city & guilds in plumbing and 20+ years experience. If anyone has or know's someone who could help me with a job I would be very grateful. Cheers, Chris.
Hi all,
can you give us any advice. I think we have been very naive about emigrating. We recently paid £3,500 for my hubby Den to gain City and Guilds plumbing qualifications. Truely believing that this would easily gain us entry to oz. How daft are we, pathway D has now been removed temporarily. We actually started self employed to be seen using these skills and have been lucky these last 2 months, being supported by family and friends giving us work. At the moment we only have my wage coming in and no more work. Please don't think we're complaining or moaning, the struggle would be worth it if we at least had a pathway to gain entry. Plz help if you can!
HI Adele
I dont know when your oh passed his city & guilds but from what i know from doing ours he would have to have at least three years site exp before he could apply sorry to say this but i think i am right unless someone knows better i had to have a min 9 years as i didnt have C&G followed up with refer from every tom dick and bloody harry.
Ron & Chel
Thanks Ron+Chel for your reply. I hope there is another way! We were hoping for no more than 2yrs as my daughter wants to go to uni and we would need to gain a place over there. To make matters worse my hubby didn't take his exams at school, he left and went to work early. we have just started e-mailing oz employers but need to register so that his CV can be uploaded. We could have applied through myself but I didn't do my final year in Hairdressing. How daft are we!! We know oz will offer our kids a better future. A bit of hope is that we have contact with my brothers neighbour, she has family in oz. Hopefully she might get us sponsorship. HOPEFULLY!!
Thanks u 2,
Adele + Den x
Hi Adele
Sorry to hear of the problems you are encountering but I think (from getting our visas throught the skilled route) that You need several years working experience(i think its 4 but maybe wrong) My hubbys a plumbing & heating engineer and has been working in the trade for over 24 years(last 4 years self-employed) He did a 4 year apprenticeship on leaving school at the age of 16 too plus other courses to get Corgi Registered. These short courses that people go on are okay but they cannot give you the on the job training that a proper apprenticeship does. I think they are a bit misleading too as people do them and then think they will get good jobs but most employers want experience more than certificates! Is there any other way you an get in? Good Luck

Hi Mandy,
I know that Den does not have loads of experience. When he left school his mum and dad were not interested in exam results, but more so board and lodgings. Now this has left us with a dilemma. Den is an intelligent and hard working guy and I feel that it's sometimes unfair that decent people who had no parental support in helping them make good career choices should also be dismissed. Den has been doing plumbing work for 10yrs for friends and family. As parents we support our 2 kids because we know what a difficult and competetive world we live in. I only wish he also had the support and advice to follow an apprenticeship when he was a school leaver. All we want is a good life and to give our children a real chance. We are trying to gain sponsorship and I have uploaded Den's CV and his work portfolio. All his clients have agreed to give out their e-mail addresses, to be contacted about the standard of workmanship. If we could turn back the clock and know what we do now, we would. Pathway D is only temp taken out and we will do our upmost to gain residency. Thanks for your support and advice. All the family wish your family well and we hope your dream lives up to your expectations.

Hi Adele Just reading some of your posts with interest ( as my OH's a plumber too ) !!! The trouble is although you hubby gained city & guilds, he will still need to prove 3/4 years non stop employement in the plumbing trade, with various references and back up from employers or clients or if self employed proof of business ie., tax bills, references from site manangers/clients, public liability insurance etc., etc., Although my husband done the old fashioned apprenticeship & got his city & guilds many moons ago, he still had to provide loads of extra info. !!!!!!! I think it best for you to ring a good migration agent so they can explain the process under the new TRA system. Go matilda and Visa unit are popular on here. They will always have a chat free of charge to tell you if your eligable, or what you need to do. Good luck with it Sally-ann

Thanks Sally-Ann,
We have got admin@advantagemigration.com on our case. Dianne Perry is the Managing Director there and has told us we don't have enough points, our free assesment. Although she is still in contact with us and helping us with any questions. Do you know how to find out how the points are totaled? We are hoping that if we get sponsorship, that we don't need an assessment or so we were told.
