Question Applying for TFN from UK??

Has anyone applied for their TFN from UK? Looking on the TFN website and it says that you have to be in Australia to apply for your TFN - says it will check with DIMA etc.??? Have heard you could apply from UK so didn't want to do anything wrong! Any info would be very much appreciated! Nat

No, you need to be in Australia to apply for a TFN and you need an Australian address for it to be sent to. The immigration computers are linked with the tax office so it won't let you proceed until you are here.

why need to?

Hi just a thought, but you dont need to get a TFN before you arrive, as it takes less than a month to get the number, and in the meantime if you start a job you are given i think about a month before you have to supply the number. If you dont supply it in the given time they give you a higher tax though - which based on time to receive number isnt a possibility. Hope that helps Gem

Also be aware Centrelink wont register you until you have the TFN so sometimes a month is a long time especially if you need to sort chilcare etc,i find it best/quickest to apply on-line as soon as you arrive, you will need an adress though,

Hi Nat,

We got here this morning and logged on to the website this afternoon and applied for our TFN. You can only apply for one (from how I read it) in Australia. The form was dead easy to do and although it says allow 20 mins to complete it took a lot less!
