New Career

Hi,

I'm looking for a new career, and one that will enable me to get permanent residency in Oz.

I currently work in Sales (not in a field that will get me into oz) but am keen for a change.

Has anyone else done this? If I do this, will I need to retrain, and gain experience here as well before I move to oz??

I wonder if anyone could help with regards to my question i was employed a few years ago by an estate agent in the renting department would i have to have a certificate or pass an exam to become employed again in the renting department of any estate agents as i would also like to get back into this kind of employment

Hi Embo,
I maybe wrong but i am sure you would have to sit some sort or course over here in order for you to gain you licence in the estate agents business,
My son in law looked in to doing this a few years back and i am sure they said it would cost him at least $900, and his police cert from ozz too.
That was two years ago he was thinking of doing it so i dont know if it has changed since then.

Hi Embo

If you were to work in property management here in WA you would have to attend a property management course and obtain your license to work in that field. Did you specialise in residential or commercial properties?

Myself I am only licensed to operate here in WA, each state has different rules, regulations, and bye-laws........... but I'm pretty certain the same is applicable in each state re registration and licensing of property management operators?

Which state do you plan on settling in? The Residential Tenancies Act takes on a different form in each state .............. same principals to a degree albeit somewhat different re procedures followed and time frames adhered to!

I did my property management course a couple of years ago with REIWA here in the west as it was a compulsory component in my Triennial Certificate.

Good property managers are indeed very hard to come by............. and there must be a bigger turnover in that discipline than any other profession? I do know that an ample supply of Panadol is a pre-requisite prior to venturing into the exciting and challenging world of property management?

Emberton: I might be wrong, but it looks like you have just hyjacked someone elses post!! I think you might get more responses to your question if you start a new thread of your own (don't take offence.... i'm just trying to help).

Bongomark: What sales are you in at the moment? Could you use your current industry to get a few steps up the ladder in your new career? If not, IT seems to be coming back into demand, having been out of demand for a few years. IT is quite a broad field (hardware, networking, programming, project management, web site development, database management, testing, sales, etc). You may find that you could put your sales experience to use in the IT industry. A word of warning though.... the list of jobs in demand for IT appears to be very targetted to specialised skills in some cases so make sure you get the exact skills required, and make sure it will still be in demand in a few years time.

good luck with which new skill you wish to take up, but you may have to think of the experenice you are required to have which i think is three yrs! So as buckbuchanan say you also have to check it will still be on the demand list..

Yea, I guess thats my main concern. I'm more than happy to retrain, but don't really want to stay here to gain 2-3yrs experience before I can go to oz. I'm not sure what the alternatives are/if there are any???

Hi Bongomark

I had that dilema a couple of years ago - because of my age I couldn't get enough points so I looked at the possibility of changing careers - not easy starting again and going back to school to get all new qualification and I must admit I felt too old and would miss the money I earn too much to do it personally speaking - luckily for me my job turned up on the jobs in demand list at the end of July and I've just sent off my visa application last week - so fingers crossed.

So the only advice I can offer is the thoughts I had - first thing you need to work out is how many points you have on the points test without an occupation - so then you can look at the trades / professions that then would get your points up highest - you get extra points for having work in the trade / occupation for certain periods of time in the last few years before applying - but if you're young enough you might be able to squeeze through with a qualification in something on the MODL jobs in demand list!! Might be harder getting employment over there if you haven't much experience and the only problem with visa applications is you wouldn't be able to apply for a visa until your skill had been assessed (so obviously you'd have to pass some qualification which takes time) - so getting started on a new qualification in a different field asap will certainly move you in the right direction - maybe some sort of apprenticeship would be most ideal as you get experience as you do the qualification - and I'm sure it might be a slight step back, be hard work for less money - but if it gives you the opportunity to move to Oz it might all be worth it.

Have a long think about what you'd like to do too - having a target of getting to Oz is one thing but getting there doing something new you've chosen to find out you don't like it only makes life harder.

Hope my thoughts give you plenty to consider - and good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for your advice BigLes. To be honest they're a lot of thoughts that I've already had, it's really tricky deciding what to do. I'm 28 at the moment by the way.

I have some debts that I am currently trying to clear. I have considered bankruptcy, which would enable me to then save some money quite quickly to pay for any course that I'd decide to take. I'm concerned about what affect this might have on a visa application.

I don't realllllly know what career I want to pursue, but I do know I want to be in Australia. So, do I retrain in a career to get me into australia but that may not be something I want to do for the rest of my career?

Is another option to go down the bankruptcy avenue, then save some money and look to study in Australia, would that be an option?

Another option is to go on a working holiday visa, (when I've cleared my debts), and try and get sponsorship but I seem to get negative vibes on the likelyhood of this being possible. It would also be in a career that I don't want to stay in long term (I currently work for a printing company as a Business Development Manager selling mainly to the trade).
