Question mining boom

hi ive just came back from perth in march while thare i noticed there is a shortage of excavator operators and lorry drivers in construction and mining .
can anyone explain why the govt dont take in drivers of any kind as not just anyone can jump on a 100ton excavator and operate it safely.

We are talking about goverment yeh? Where common sense is most uncommon.
We hear reports of $100k + p/a and they train you to drive and still no takers?
Maybe it's not only government that lack the sense?

Most mining jobs are fly in fly out - for most migrants I guess one of the reasons we move is to spend more quality time together. It's almost impossible to get a rental in the areas where the mines are so families are unable to be together.

Hi

Our goldmine in NSW prefers women haul truck drivers on their Caterpillar 797's as they are kinder on the trucks than men. The mine will train you to drive these monsters! The engines are worth around $1,000,000 each and they don't like replacing them too much!!!!!!!!

Try getting a mining job, if you do all the courses and pay the bucks (a lot) , you are not guaranteed a job and thats from the guy running the training. Some are lucky and drop on. The mines are making redundancies now 4000, the companies are gettin the jitters over the Chinese catching the global cold. That will hit WA in a domino effect down the line

Hi Keily

There has been a Government Think Tank about truckers and visas. It culminated in this accouncement from DIAC:

Changes to 457 visa eligibility for truck drivers

The Truck Drivers Association did not attend the crucial Working Group Meeting.

The Government then produced new legislation, effective from 1st August 2008:

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skill...ccupations.pdf

Please go to Page 14 of the Instrument.

The net effect is that Heavy Truck Drivers can be sponsored for jobs in the mining and regional construction sector.

However unless they can demonstrate that they have all necessary Aussie licences, the necessary safety certificates for the mines or constructions sites, the necessary experience with huge off-road vehicles etc, the chances are that DIAC might argue that the wannabe migrant driver is actually being sought for a trainee or apprentice position. There is a blanket fatwah on 457 visas for apprentices or trainees.

If the driver could drive an on-road vehicle between the mine/site and the town/city, the question will be, "What does the truck carry? Is this guy merely a Delivery Driver, because if so there is a fatwah on him too?"

I reckon that the British Driver with a real chance of sponsorship under the new rules has spent 2 years in Oz as a Working Holiday Maker. He may have started off as a casual labourer on site (probably did.) However during his 2 years in Oz he has obtained all the training, licences and documents that he needs, plus he has made friends with the contractor who owns the monster machines and has been allowed to drive one for real at the mine or on site, so that he has hands-on recent experience as well with the photos, certificates, references etc to prove it.

I suspect they have pretty well slammed the door on all other would be migrant drivers except those who have been driving comparable machinery in other countries. Do we actually have any machines of Aussie size working anywhere in the UK? I don't know?
Cheers

Gill

Most uk quarries have heavy plant but casual labourer, they do not set casual labourers on, as the training guy was stating out of 500, 50 might get set on thats was before the global cold got a hold. Richardsmining do training courses after you`ve done the other safety b,blue card stuff but you are not guaranteed a job. As you state a lot of uk licences and certs don`t mean diddly squat here
