Hi, as far as I am aware the UK qualifications are relevant but when submitting info to the TRA it is advisable to send specifics i.e. not just the certs - references from your employers that state what type of work you were doing for them and/or a statutory declaration detailing the experience you have. (I am open to correction but my hubby is an Electrician and the co.'s he worked for are no longer in existence hence the declaration but also he got a reference from his employer saying what he did and in what capacity).

Hi my husband is also an electrician who has run his own company for the last five years. He can't get any past references so he is completing a statutory declaration. From what I've read on here it needs to be quite detailed. He also has City and Guilds 236 1&2 and 16th Edition but along with sending the certificates he is detailing his apprenticeship in the stat dec along with his work experience over the last five years. I hope that's what they want anyway. On the form you fill in for the TRA it states exactly what you need. You can download one from workplace.gov.au - Home click on individuals and then migrants. It's self explanatory after that.

Hi andycraddy,
i'm a spark iv'e done my TRA and we've got our visa but one bit of advice i took which i was grateful for is to get 2 of every piece of paperwork signed as you will need them again when you need to get your electrical license. I'm now in process of applying for an ARTC from TRA. You can only apply for this when you have your residency visa and although it's from the same people who issue your trade recogniton you still have to send the whole lot again, hence why when you get all you copies of docs signed get 2 of each.
Get as much proof as you can muster, it's grief but you only have to do it once.

The bit i'm doing now i think narrows down what sort of electrician you are, someone else may put me right but i think an installtion/contracting electrician is an electrical mechanic in Oz. I know i think i have to do a couple of tests when i get out there aswell like there equivelant of the 2391 (inspec and test) even if you have it over here. I'm just trying find out more as i go along. Will keep you posted. Good Luck with Refs, etc.

The answer is NO....as soon as u arrive in oz yr bits of paper from uk are not recognised, its that simple.u need a license, either mech. or fitter and its based on oz wiring regs and practical exam..

For your visa application/TRA..yes put in all your electrical qualifications and a few more! they will all be recognised and help towards your overall skill assessment, they will help in your visa,TRA,and ARTC...then u get to oz and its only australian certs that matter..

Hi Redback,
I gather you are in Oz now! How did you find organising the courses you had to do? As i said on previous post i believe i would be counted as an electrical mechanic as i am an installation electrician here. I have tried looking up a couple of courses over there to try and get the special class grading but think i might be running before i walk. What are courses i will need to do to get my full license when i get there. oh! i'm moving to queensland so i know it maybe different elsewhere.
Sorry so many questions mate

When u get to oz u will have to do a course and regs exam it will take about a week ,its just to check that u can work safely to oz standards then off u go, special class in what ? theres electronics and plcs these are mainly targeted at the maintenance sparks, ( electrical fitters) you want to get an electrical fitter mechanic license if poss this enables u to do installation work as well as maintenance even if u dont use it u will see employers will like you to have both
