Job Titles? If the wording is different, is the job?

We are just looking into re-locating to Adelaide and are looking to start the process of a Visa application 136.

My husband is currently an Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Engineer. He worked at BMW/Rover in Swindon for 16 years where he did his apprenticeship and studies. His role involved fixing/maintaining pretty much all the equipment used in a factory that produces panels for cars. We then moved 2 years ago to Devon and he now works for a company that is part of the Ginsters group maintaining all the equipment used to make pies!!

We started trying to look for a similar job on the SOL and MODL lists and sent a copy of his C.V. to the Engineering recognition board. They referred us to TRA. We looked at the list again and the nearest we can find to his role is 'Fitter' although it doesn't classify electro-mechanical.

He isn't sure therefore if this is the right job to apply for to the TRA.

Is it likely that it is just that they have a different title for the same role? Is this common?

I don't suppose there are any electro-mechanical engineers/fitters out there contemplating the move, or have made the move? If there are, we would love to hear from you.

      Thanks for reading.

They don't really have electro-mech engineers here in Aus. So that may be why you're struggling to find the classification?

Just for info - electrical work is regulated - you have to be licensed to work on mains voltage equipment. You can under certain conditions maintain & repair low voltage (electronic stuff). I've done this but it can be a grey area if there is high voltage nearby so most companies wouldn't risk allowing you to work on any electrical equipment. Insurance & 'duty of care'.
To get an electrical license you normally have to do a 4 yr apprenticeship. In other words if you fry yourself or someone else after a 4 yre apprenticeship its not the companies fault. Cynical but true :)
Fitters can do a restricted electrical license which allows you to 'disconnect - reconnect' to 600V to do mech servicing only. I did this in NSW but other states may operate differently.

Thanks for the info. Doing more digging and we have paid for a personalised assesment from a migration agent after reviewing CV etc.
From what have found out on-line, OH will have to be registered and may have to work supervised at first which will be a pain.
SA are supposed to be one of the more reasonable states when clearing electrical workers. I have read a few horror stories about how hard and long-winded it is in Queensland, but whatever we have to do, we'll do it.

      hi tracey and phill,

we are also starting on putting everything together for a 136vias and we want to go to adelaide too :D

ash is multiskilled as a electrical/mechanical engineer.
after 3 days nonstop on the net i finally figured that an engineer here is not an engineer there - so what we will be applying for is 'fitter'

as far as i understand it don't overcomplicate things and try to make it straight forward - you don't have to work in the profession you are getting assessed. (am i wrong with this???? please put me right if i am!!!)

we might add additional skills because i've read the more skills on top the better. but you have to 'prove' that you can do the job you are applying for first (if that makes sense)

ash obviously will have to get a license for the electrical part  - but he can do that later on, right?!?

please let me know how the assessment went.
      where abouts are you?
      have you got any children?
      please someone stop me

      talk to you soon
      susi
