Until i get the contract in my hands I'm not counting chickens, and if it doesn't arrive I may well end up actually counting chickens on a farm or something !
Canberra's a funny place and probably dissimilar to Sydney..mainly public service which requires citizenship for employment as a general rule, they do let a few permanent residents take contract or "non-ongoing" work but other VISA's don't seem to get a look in (I've got PR).
Agencies, so far have been in general, awful..hardly call you back, don't want to help. It's possible to get work through agencies with a citizenship waiver for some jobs, but some agencies are not interested in doing the paperwork so just tell you that you're not acceptable, but then another agency will say that you are . It's difficult to work out who's telling you the truth.....do they just want the applications to prove they're good at recruiting, is the job there or not, and are they even interested in you?
One PR has managed to get good contract work with the Federal Govt., but her partner couldn't get a job after 100 applications so i think has gone back to college and will be changing careers. Part of the migration process is the ability/opportunity to change careers so I hope it works out for them. Nevertheless I got a good rundown on their experiences so it's lowered expectations. Just getting a foot in the door to be able to prove your worth is the key initial outcome, or as they call it here...a "fair go" !
ITIL is taken quite seriously here and used in selection criteria (even if it's not well practiced in the actual job)...at least a foundation certificate is very useful.
Hi Slean
Would this be your first job in Canberra?
I have a 176 for ACT and currently learning web/java development. We are considering moving over in 2014 when I should have a couple of years experience in this field.

As most of the times you are not supposed to work with real or live data yourself. Any insight would be very useful :)

You're well qualified and would tick all the boxes. There are a lot of PMO's here who are out of work, but shortages in Business Analysts, and Testers/Test Management...but then you'd run into the citizenship issue as the projects are normally related to public service transformation, which isn't insurmountable but would preclude work in sensitive areas such as Defence, or Customs which i think ATOS specialise in? Unless ATOS can help with a waiver and transfer you to the Aussie partner...have you explored that as an option?

It will be yes (hopefully), not been here that long and I did all the settling in stuff while my partner had the job lined up (she was sponsored for the VISA's).

Thanks for your feedback. So I might tick all the boxes but not the right one ;) (i.e. not a citizen and I'm a PM)
My background is Windows Server & Network engineering but to my knowledge these functions require a screening more often then PM work as you will have direct access to sensitve data or components.
Most of my expertise is in banking and government and I have been screened from top to bottom and left to right. But that probably doesn't count in Australia.
ATOS had, till some months ago no presence in OZ, now that they have taken over Siemens IT they have, will have a look from that perspective.
Keep us posted in regards to your experiences, especially as ACT-ers are a rare breed ;)

I'm an IT contractor (ASP.NET, MVC and SQL Server) on a 417 working holiday visa. I arrived in Sydney on 9th February and started work about 10 days later. I moved to Brisbane on the 4th June and started work 1 week later.
The market seems pretty good to me so far, apparently most applicants are from Asia and it's as important here than you fit in culturally as it is that you can technically do the work. This puts Brit's at a distinct advantage.
The rates I've had so far are both around $60 per hour. This includes super (9%) so about $55 per hour minus tax. This is about £10 more per hour than I was getting int the UK (north England).
I would happily stay here and either continue contracting or go for a more permanent role. The working atmosphere in both places is leagues ahead of anything in the UK, for a start the bosses seem to appreciate you.

Hey guys,
Im pretty sure this is the right thread I need to post in, I hope so atleast.
I'm qualified in CCNA & MCSE (Microsoft systems engineering)
Currently I'm in Wales, UK but I've been considering strongly a move to Oz.
I'll shortly be doing a working holiday out there to get a taste of australian life.
I just wanted to know the ins and outs of the prospect of a Networking job in australia, specifically, Melbourne.
Wages, ect. Im 21 and a female. I've never been able to get a job in the feild ive specified in, currently I do technical for Virgin Media, what are the propects of working for someone like Telstra?
I'm new to this so I'm looking for some good pointers, please & thank you! x

Hello,
Well I guess the best thing to do would be to look at the OZ job sites such as SEEK, the last time I looked there appeared to be a few networking jobs. I'm gussing your MSCE is with Windows 2008? The working holiday is a good idea, you have nothing to lose.
Regards,
P.

Hey guys,
Just a quick question - is CCNA (Cisco) and MCSE (Microsoft certified systems/network engineering) a recognized qualification in Australia?
-
Hello, In the eye's of the ACS, I believe it is yes.
