      Teaching assistant vacancies in wa

      Hi ,

This is my first time on Poi,it is really interesting and helpful to read what others have wrote.

We obtained our permanent Residency Visa last June and validated it in February with a trip to Perth.

My husband is an Electronics Engineer and specialises in the Broadcasst Industry,he is travelling to Perth in August to hopefully secure a job and a rental property.

i'am NNEB qualified and have had my qualifications assessed by the Australian Goverment.,I have twenty years experience five of those working in a Special Needs School.

I wondered what the chances are of me getting a similar position in Perth, and what the average salary is.

      Thanks S.

Teacher aide positions in Australia are quite different. They tend to be very lowly paid, often short term contracts, often part time and usually in high demand from mums who want school hours while their kids are small. You dont actually need any qualifications in most cases other than a clean police record and a first aid certificate. You'd be lucky to get $30k pa I would think and getting a job would need you to get yourself known so you might have to volunteer for a while.

Sounds about the same as the UK then apart from they like you have have some official training, NVQ or some such, which is being phased out now anyways

All the TA's I know at schools are Mums who work part time and get paid not a great amount but like the job as it fits in with their kids being at school. One is a former childminder who swapped over when her sons school asked her if she was interested to apply. She jumped at the chance as her kids were getting older and it suited her better, but paid a bit less than her childminding.

In reply to the OP - I know a few people who work in the education system in Aus and they all tell me that TA's tend to be Mums who have volunteered at their kids school first and helped out lots and then gone on to paid posts on the rare occasion they actually arise. Although this is a different state to the one you are heading to, it does seem to be the usual way to get into the job. Agree it doesn't seem to pay well either.

I work with children and am considering taking a totally different career path when we move to Aus next year. For a fair while I've felt midwifery calling me and am seriously considering going back and studying again.

There is now training for teacher assistants - more training equals more money - choices -

      Certificate III in Teacher Assistant,
      Certificate IV Teacher Assistant
      Diploma of Teaching Assistant.

there's probably Cert 1 and 11 as well. Not sure what a NNEB would equate to.
May be contact some one here to see if they can advise -

      Hi
This is my first time using this website and i seem to get a mixed review on the requirements of Teaching Assistants. Ive followed several links that other people have recommended but still seem to be scratching my head. My husband and i have a skilled permanent residency visa already, im trying to find out what my qualifications would equate to in the Australian system. I have several years experience as a teaching assistant and currently hold the following:-
      Higher Level Teaching Assistant
      NVQ 3Teaching Asst
CACHE Level 3 in Special needs
Any info that would help would be very appreciated.

      Lisa
