I am going to qualify as a general adult nurse but would love to specialise in midwifery. Do you think the best option out of all would to go over on student visa to oz then get job as midwife throught this then the ability to apply for residency? x
Why not apply for a grad course that has a rotation into the midwifery section? Have a look at the private hosps they often offer rotations that fit your needs
Id come over as a RN and then do post grad in midwifery when your here and settled.its only a year i think. Youll have prior learning credits too as we cover midwifery in our training, where as aussies dont.

Hey so do you think i should get my degree in general nursing, and come straight to oz on the graduate programe if its poss for me? thanks for your help

I know it's different for different states, but certainly at the hospital I work at there is immense competition for graduate places and Aussie trained nurses are given priority.
I just want PIO to be a happy place where people are nice to each other and unicorns poop rainbows

Sorry Ryan but you can think what you like. If it sounds "crass" to you then I suggest that you first ask yourself why I would give my time to post my advice and what is my intent..........to help or simply to bignote myself? Do I need to?
Ratchet and I gave constructive criticism which was answered with the poster's statement that she thought it was "tailored to the job" when it clearly wasn't and despite being told (in so many words) that it wasn't. My "little quip" as you put it, was intended to illustrate the point that many "young" (especially newly qualified) do not know their limitations and will not accept their limitations when they are pointed out to them. They often "get the bit between their teeth" and race ahead without thinking of the direction they should be taking. If that sounds patronising or unhelpful, then so be it, but it is intended as constructive advice and is without malice.

It's totally down to what is affordable and practical to do and of course what you want to do job wise. It's easy enough to get into midwifery here as its done as a post grad, unlike the uk. If your on a temp visa and study here your likely to face huge study costs. You could wait til you have perm residency then it will be costed cheaper.

i have removed my post seen as it was so "unhelpful" . and will be revising my statement the next time i need to apply for a job, maybe then i will have post registration experience and have a different persepective on what to write. thanks for feedback.

I'm due to graduate this Dec & am flying straight to OZ as I'm lucky enough to have already obtain PR. Do I have to wait to be registered with AHPRA first before applying for the new grad program? I'm a little worried about the time it takes for registration with the NMC first, then applying to AHPRA. If I applied & registration had not yet come through, do they allow you to postpone or deferr until it comes through?

Hi, i will bequalifying in July 2012 as an adult branch nurse. I recently attended an oz andnz convention that had employers from both countries. The state immigrationbooth told me that to get a working visa as a nurse i would need 12 months experiencefor NZ and 2 years experience for OZ. Reading this thread it seems people arefinding that they can get over earlier. I really want to go over there andeventually get PR.
My interest is in critical care but i'm willing to get experience in surgicalas my final 2 placements are currently elective surgery and gynea. Then myfinal management placement will be emergency surgical and trauma unit.
Any tips on getting out there quicker would be really appreciated. I will begoing by myself.
Thank you.

Hi, I am new to this forum but I too am a recently qualified adult nurse and I want to move myself and my family to Perth asap. Would anyone be able to help with creating a cv and personal statement that I should send to the Australian hospitals and which type of visa I should be applying for. I am 39yrs old with no post reg experience yet, I qualified this month and am due to start a job in the UK in May. Thanks

Hi Ratchet, I would be interested in any info that you could provide, Go Matilda have informed me that I need to be 3 years qualified before applying, I will be 3 years in my current post in sept 2012 adult nursing in palliative care. I was lead to believe that you could apply any time after you have graduated.
confused !!!! Karen
