Water shortage in Oz

What is the current situation with the general water shortage in Australia? Is it effecting the household bills? Are things getting any better that what was reported a few months ago in the UK - doom and gloom..!!

It all depends on where you are - things are still pretty dire in the south east of the country - Victoria and southern NSW are still in drought but Sydney at least got some rain in its catchment and I know Southern Queensland has had rain but not sure if it has fallen in the right places - the Queenslanders will know.

In Victoria they are taking water from the farmers who grow the food in order to supply the loo flushes of the Melbourne city dwellers - a potentially catastrophic situation for the farmers of course. Victoria, especially to the west, is looking particularly sad. Gippsland to the east is looking better.

They were hoping for big things from this La Nina weather pattern but the rain just hasnt fallen in quite the right places for the south unfortunately.

the dams reached 39.9% which was .1% short of us coming off level 6 ,,too be honest if you have water tanks you dont really notice a problem ,you soon learn to be careful with water over here.

Does everyone take measures to recycle their water then at the moment, or is the dryer climate the normal thing? I try and re-use my water here in the UK I.e washing up water used for watering the plants ect.

Here in Beerwah we have no water restrictions :) We do have rainwater tanks for our loos and washing machines but we can use as much as we like..
However having said that we are so much more cautious now than we were in England..I think because everyone is, it makes you want to be..

I notice quite a few houses have a large rain water tank.
What is it used for, as rain water isnt clean, does it run through a filter system. Are the tanks cleaned.
Surely it isnt used for drinking, cleaning teeth bath or shower.
All info greatfully recieved.

Hi Chris,

The water tanks are called 'Grey Water' they are mainly used for washing cars and watering plants, not conected to the mains so we get the proper stuff in the house, it's just another way of saving water.

Is there any parts of Australia (larger built up areas) which do not have water supply issues at the moment or are likely to?
