Ours took 12 weeks from leaving our home to being unpacked in WA. We brought duvets and mattresses - you can't bring them if they contain feathers, the guys who packed wrapped everything up. You can bring xmas decs and xmas trees providing there are no pine cones on them - even remove plastic ones.

Thanks for that Ali!!! Yay I can take my mattress....
Hubby says it will be too warm for a 15 tog feather quilt anyway

we sent our stuff about 6 weeks ago.. have been doing without since then (very hard with toddler and baby but we are managing.. just).. i found that when we moved from oz to ireland we sent stuff the week we left.. BIG MISTAKE.. we had to wait 10 weeks on the other end and i just ended up having to buy stuff i just couldn't wait for it to arrive.. so waste of money! this time i learnt.. i sent it so early.. that we fly out next wednesday.. arrive friday and our stuff should, hopefully, clear customs in 2-3 weeks.. so i can get by for that long on the other end. re stuff to bring.. my recommendation is this (having moved twice and lived in oz):
- furniture.. don't bring beds.. they are sooooo cheap it's not worth it.. same goes for sofas and fridge washing machine.. just not worht a) the hassle b) you can't live without them for that lenght of time at either end c) waste of money as you can get good new or used out there
- wooden things.. you can bring wooden items but they must be sealed wood (ie varnished or painted in some way) otherwise they won't clear customs
- garden tools and kids slides etc.. i was warned by our shipping firm to be so careful about these.. same goes for work tools.. they have to be 100% clean and free from even the slightest bit of dirt.. if customs find any soil on them they will just spray the whole container and charge you up to 3000 dollars for it! so for the sake of a kids slide.. leave it where it is.. needless to say we left the kids slide we had but dh has painters tools so all of them were cleaned with jeyes fluid before being sent.
- wicker and baskets .. you can't send
- quilts and pillows.. had never heard that re not bringing them but i figures if they have feathers in them.. don't pack them.. plus why would you? again you need them at either end right away so why do without them.. they will only smell weird once you unpack them.. just buy new ones..
- pets.. honestly.. i know they are 'family' but i can't believe people ship them out at such cost.. really i would think very very long and hard before you bring a pet.. not fair on the pet either to put them through all that time in quarantine..

well dont I feel the fool over the matress and duvet matter...I am going to phone the removals this morning when they open about the matress matter becuase I am more than certain they told us we had to get rid of our matresses...not happy!! so confused...lesson learned I guess...I should of became a member on PIO before I moved my things into storage
Sorry I forgot to add...not sure where abouts we will be living in Melbourne...not decided!! We keep looking at all suburbs...we will be living with a friend when we get there in the city of melbourne...I like lots of places...cranbourne, craigiebourne, melton...list goes on to be honest...where are you looking at going?
We are only upto the medical phase so not sure how long it is going to take us from here!
