The best way to furnish a rental

Hi everyone

Hubby and me are debating what is the best way to do thisas we are only bringing personal stuff with us and no furniture.

Is it
1. Buy secondhand just now and then get new stuff when you buy a house ( to me this seems like wasting money by paying for something you dont intend to keep - no matter how cheap it is)

2. Buy new things you like so you can take it to you new home ( even if it is not really in keeping with your rental but money well spent)

3. Rent a furnished place and stay there until you find somewhere to buy (maybe up to 12 weeks)

What do you think?

Mandy

HI MANDY .... I THINK I WOULD GO WITH OPTION 2 ..... ALTHOUGH BEING IN A FULLY FURNISHED PROPERTY WOULD SAVE YOU HAVING TO BUY STRAIGHT AWAY .... I HAVE FOUND VIA REAL ESTATE ETC THAT FURNISHED HOUSES ARE A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE TO RENT .... YOU COULD BE USING THE EXTRA MONEY TO BUY THINGS FOR YOUR OWN HOME .... SO AT LEAST ITS NOT MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN SO TO SPEAK

Hi
Option 2 if you have decided definately not to bring anything but give it serious thought My neighbour came with a suitcase and in hign sight wishes she had brought more perhaps need to look at web sites to work out costs of everything. We brought beds linen table chairs with us and brought white goods and settee when we got here fridge freezer and washing machine approx 1000 dollars 3 piece suite 900 dollars. just an idea for you.

Houses you buy tend to be bigger than uk houses ,so there is always an extra room to fill ,you could buy minimal stuff and then use it in a family or spare room in your new house.A futon will do as a sofa and bed for a few months ,a patio table can double up as a dining table etc .I would have a look at Welcome to Fantastic Furniture you also get freebies like TV'S and dinner sets which come in handy.

We stayed in a furnished rental for 12 weeks whilst our furniture arrived. Despite bringing the entire contents our our house - we've still had heaps more stuff to buy - as Cal said the houses are bigger. I'd go with her suggestion of buying minimal stuff, allows you time to look around for stuff you like and want rather than having to impulse buy because you need it

Thanks for the replies

I want to go with option 2 as well.

We are bringing other small things with us but just not big pieces of furniture. I have already packed blow up beds and sleeping bags - tiles can be hard and I like my comfort lol.

Just be careful to buy neutral things as thats what i did ,bought good stuff i liked but when we bought this house a few pieces just dont fit as id like them to ,i.e,tv unit would look better here as a corner unit and i bought a long one with display cabinets on the side!!lol, good excuse for another when funds permit!!

hi ya, i would go with option 2 as well, we came over with 4 suitcases, still waiting for our container (left our house 4th march, got sent about 2 weeks ago! and wont get here til 10th june!!!) so we have had to buy stuff, new beds, fridge,tv's etc, but like some of the others have said at least you can still use them after your stuff arrives, or when you buy somewhere, where we are its rare to find a furnished place, and the 2 we did see are way over priced!
