Hia

In the UK Merchant Navy (and I think internationally) "reefer" means Refrigerated Cargo. Ergo a reefer is a ship that carries refrigerated cargo. I've no idea whether these ships also carry ordinary containers on deck or something. (When I'm out sailing yachts in the Solent, I see lots of different cargo ships but I don't know enough to know what sort of ships 3/4 of them are to be honest.)

I would suggest that you give the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency a ring. The number is 02389 329100. Ask for somebody in the Southampton Marine Office. They should be able to tell you all about "Reafer Containers" if these are something different.

Best wishes

Gill

Thanks for that. It was just a company we have contacted to give us a quote on our removal, have given this as an option. To keep costs down. I was told that the company who own the 'reafer' bring their supplies over and instead of just returning empty they offer this service, to take removals.
It sort of makes sence.....they may aswell make something on the return journey but is it practicle for us. I am not much of a gambler so would like to know first hand from someone who has done it, that it was ok.
cheers for any feedback.

Hi Lisa

The idea certainly makes sense and I wouldn't be at all surprised if some reefer ships are dual purpose.

The MCA will know and if Tim sees this thread, he may well know as well since Tim is an expert on Matters Marine.

Best wishes

The company that mentioned it was http://www.1stchoicemoversworldwide.com.
I have yet to get the prices, but she said it was a cheaper option.
Doree Bonner International are another we are getting quotes from as they are based in Dartford, Kent. Hoping as they are local that they may give better prices than the London based ones......
I have a couple of assesments booked for next week, then I will be able to back to you on how the prices compared.

Hi,

A reefer container, as mentioned, is a container which has been used to transport refrigerated goods to the UK, and shipping companies want to get them out of the UK so that more refrigerated goods can be brought back. The refrigeration part of the container is not used or may even be removed but because this is in the end of the container you don't get the full 20ft and will be a bit cheaper as a result. We had 3 different shipping companies come and give us a quote and because of the volume of our stuff they all quoted for a reefer - so we got the explanation 3 times. In the end we took more stuff so had a full 20ft container which cost us about 200 pound more.
