lap tops and computer

Is it worth taking my computer or just the laptops?

Computer has latest screen but oldish tower, is ok for wireless internet and just general word etc, dont need much else on it.

Or should i sell and just take laptops?

Do these have to go into container or onflight?

one more thing anyone bought a dongle? wireless internet just plug in anywhere? and does it still work when in OZ?

Would like to be online as soon as in OZ, would miss PIO lol
thanks sahron

We left our desktop computer but bought 3 laptops all of which work ok here...I also bought our NETGEAR wireless router with us and it has been fine..It was in fact easier to set up with Telstra than BT!!!..Also bought another laptop since being here and no probs connecting to internet with the English router..
Mke sure to bring all your paperwork that you got with your router though as I blocked mine out once and had to phone the local number..Luckily they have a customer service dept in Australia

When you asked about the dongle - do you mean the little usb modem that enables you to pick up broadband wherever you are - not just a wireless router that sits in your own home?

If you mean the usb broadband dongle then I think they would charge you international roaming prices if you were still with a UK company. And that would be incredibly expensive!!!! If you replaced the sim in it with one from an Aus company you would need to get the dongle unlocked (the man at 3 assured me it could be done but I have no idea how easy that is) and sign up to an Aus plan (I dont think we have pay as you go here at the moment).
Quoll is online now

laptops and computers

Hi Shazney

I run a computer business over here.

Things to bear in mind:-

Wireless router (make sure you pronounce this "rowter" rather than "rooter" when you get here!) - this will most likely have a UK transformer plug combined. You will need a UK adapter to run it off the mains over here (can be bought from hardware stores in Oz for around $12).

Computer equipment is a bit more expensive over here than in the UK.

If you have any computers which are still under warranty in the UK, the warranty may not cover them if you bring them to Australia.

It can take a while (couple of weeks) to get your phoneline/broadband connected once you arrive. If you already have accommodation sorted beforehand, it would be an idea to contact a provider beforehand. You may want to try IINET first iiNet - Broadband Internet - Phone - VOIP - ADSL and see if they offer NakedDSL in your area so you won't even need a phone line.

Marilyn
