Hi everyone
Just a question as we have Tesco, Sainsburys,Asda,Morrisons what does oz have?
I know that you Have Woolies and Coles are there any others?
also when people say that the shopping can be a bit pants but what dont they sell that people cannot live without? I heard that fruit is fresher and meat can be cheaper but what would you take if you could?

:)

There is only Woolies and Coles. However, there is Aldi too :(. The big two are taking the p1ss a bit in terms of the weekly shop. The quality is there, but every week the prices see-saw vastly. Also (as I used to Woolies head office), they charge higher prices in wealthier suburbs and sell knocked off goods in cheap areas. There is a severe lack of competition and hence they do what they like.

They also dictate to some extent fuel prices and where to buy fuel from. Woolies is Caltex, Coles is Shell -they offer a discount.

The choice of brands/products is limited too. Instead of 10 brands of say Baked Beans you have 3 (Shops own, Heinz and SPC).

Fruit is better at the markets , meat is better at the butchers.

Hope that helps.

Hi

I was the same as you because i love M&S, Asda, Next, House Of Fraser etc., but when it somes down to it, i dont think this becomes a big issue as pastures new and all!

Do as they do in rome (shop like the aussie's), things like shopping will be different but lifestyle will mainly change in aus.

What i'm trying to say is that these type of questions came to me too but as time goes on and our move gets closer (getting excited now) these questions change to more important ones like houses, cars, work, colleges etc., I think you will find it the same. Apart from fashion shopping of course (for women that never changes, however you will still have access to the internet too).

Thumbs up

There seem to be Woolies , Coles, Woolies , Coles or Woolies, but they are fine, everything you need apart from they dont sell wine and beer, doh so you have to get your stubbies from the bottle shop, and these are FANTASTIC. A great big beer fridge where the more you buy the cheaper it is. We have eaten more fruit since we got here as it is fresh and plentifull and the Melons are humungous, price seems about the same as uk or slightly cheapes but the ozzies are complaining as the foodstuff have apparetntly gone up by 60 % in the last 2 years and the goverment are about to launch an enquirery, We have smaller supermarkets such as Spar and Foodworks. Meat is cheap and good. The other thing that is quite strange is the ammount of pie shops that sell PIES. They are on every street courner and usually next to one another and they sell pies in every variety as long as it is steak. But heyho 23 days in and life is good, Dan

There are Bi-LO, which is the same company as Coles, sells same things etc but a bit cheaper I think? There are Safeways I think, but not sure where, just seen it advertised in a newspaper! IGA is a chain of local small supermarkets. Aldi is pretty good for meat and veg. You can also buy HP sauce here! Mayonnaise is yellow, but tastes similar. The big supermarkets are not as well priced as in UK, so I spend more here.
Big Dad's Pies is that Dan? My hubby loves those! No Cheese and Onion or Meat and Potato though.

No Aldi in WA that I'm aware of. Now whilst I loved the choice of Asda, Tesco et al - my hubby likes the fact that when I nip to the shops for some bread I'm not gone for 3 hours and come back with bargains galore which I couldn't resist..... Still, I'd love to go around Asda

Oh Jo - can't believe you're looking for lambrini lol

The only thing that we can't get out here that we miss is Chop brown sauce. That's it. Everything else it's either the local equivalent, or we don't bother.

We tend to use Woollies for all grocery shopping, and then fill up with meat from the butchers and fruit and veg from the market.
The local "fresh" market has some real bargains, on Saturday we went along and spent $25 and came away with:
A net of 8 good sized green peppers
2kg of apples
1 kg of peaches
5kg bag of potatoes
1kg of seedless grapes
a bag of mushrooms
a bag of 3 iceberg lettuces
a punnet of cherry tomatoes
1 cucumber
1kg of kiwi fruit
1kg of oranges
a net of brown onions
2kg of bananas
(bigger bargains are to be had if you buy big, such as a 10kg crate of grapes, mangoes or tomatoes for $10! Also WHOLE watermelons - and they were HUGE, for $1. I declined on the basis that they were about the same size as my fridge, and my arms were long enough already)

It all weighed a ton by the time I got back to the car! And can you imagine getting the same price in Asda?
