We are flying to Oz with Singapore airlines and phoned them to ask about extra baggage allowance if emigrating. They informed us that if we were validating our visa we are allowed 40kg each instead of 20kg. Unfortunaley we validated our visas last year. My question is will they know that we have already validated our visas or would it be a very cosltly mistake to try.

Mmmmmm..........Its a shame you wont be able to bring as much with you, but it sounds to me, like a perfect excuse to buy lots more new clothes when you get here !!!!!!

Hi Brooksey. See you're from our old neck of the woods. We hail from Rotherham.
We had the same problem last month when we flew out with Singapore but we just decided to take the least amount of stuff we could manage with. Even so, we still came out at about 10k over our collective 60k allowance. We had no choice but to risk it and I said I'd burst into tears at check in if need be!!! As it turns out, they never flickered so much as an eyelash, never mind an eyelid. When I think of the things I binned at the last minute arrrggghhh!!!! Also, some friends of ours flew last year with Emirates I think. They were 50k over their allowed weight (yes thats 5 0 K!!!!!). The first check in desk they went to wanted to charge them £1000 for putting it through. They decided to try another check in point and just sailed straight through no problem. So it seems to depend on the mood of the person at check in more than anything.
So its up to you I suppose and whether you have nerves of steel or not. Personally I'm glad we didn't push it too far. We have managed for the last month with limited clothing, etc and yesterday we had a phone call to say our container had now docked in Melbourne so it shouldn't be too long now before we are reunited with our belongings.
Best of luck.
T xx

Is this extra baggage allowance valid for the first time that you are going to Australia??
No, not if you're just going on holiday/reccie, it's only when you're actually emmigrating (you'll need to prove that you're going to live, e.g visa, one way tickets)
We are going on a temporary long-stay business visa 457. This is valid for 4 years. It is the first time we will be entering Australia. So I am guessing that means we would be eligible for an extra baggage allowance? We have never had the visa stamped.
I am confused as I keep reading posts on here saying if you are on a spouse visa this extra baggage allowance does not cover you. Its my husband's visa and I am going over on the same visa. Sorry perhaps I am just being a bit slow... oops.
Sorry Wallace I dunno then, I'd imagine you would be eligible but you'd be better off waiting till someone who's actually gone in a spouse visa comes along, don't want to give you dud info!

I'm going to use this company to send a 30KG suitcase when I go, it'll cost about £250 but that's a lot cheaper than excess luggage. www.personalporter.co.uk
No experience of using them but they look good and someone mentioned them to me.
